Even though I've never cared for his politics, I think he deserves the recognition.

Is the Nobel Prize the Napoleon Complex for unappreciated/ineffective US executives?

Yasser Arafat is a fellow recepient, as is Mother Teresa. And Gorbachev. And Martin Luther King.

What are the qualifications, again?
That reminds me of a joke....

Well deserved award.

If only people would listen.

Fat chance of that, eh?

He should have won the Nobel Prize for Climate.

The Nobel people really need to get a handle on their categories.

Yes, I know, that if we don't get a handle on climate change it can affect the earth in such a way that wars and stuff break out. Yeah. Bla bla. Whatever.

I know mods who've done more to harken peace than Al Gore.

The fact that Bad Penny and I live in any type of peaceful co-existence is a testament to that.

Al Gore wins the Nobel?

I say "NObel."

'Nuff said.

Hmmmm. I like the idea of the AW Mods winning the Peace Prize. I could sure use my share of 1.5 million.

Isn't it interesting how politicians get credit for the work of thousands of scientists?

I'm glad Al won, but I'm still at a loss to how a former weapons and ammunition manufacturer could have a peace prize named after him.

That's almost as incongruous as having a "Gerald Ford Balance and Poise Award" or an "Augustus Caesar Prenatal Care Award". ;0

The fact of the matter is that is is difficult to award a prize to thousands of scientists. But I think those climatologists would acknowledge that few people have done more to raise awareness of climate change. I've certainly seen many of them tip their hats to Mr. Gore in gratitude. As he does to them.

Oh, and he is sharing the prize with the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

it's not an award for science, and it's only been awarded for "raising awareness" in a tangential way.

it's a peace prize, normally awarded for concrete actions involving peace efforts in concrete conflicts.

this one was awarded on the basis of speculation about armed conflicts that could arise from global warming and, as such, is a little fuzzy in its focus.

even so, good for gore.

Hurrah for Al! Anyone check out the IgNobel awards? Ignobelaward.com, research that "makes people laugh and then THINK."

Al Gore has been given the Nobel Peace Prize 2007 for his contribition to a future peace between greenhouse gases and the atmosphere.

Congratulations, Al.
