This one happened in New Haven, CT. Men in a white van arrived at a woman's home and told her the oil company had sent her there to work on her chimney. They told the woman she owed them $1600 for cleaning and fixing the chimney. The catch was that they told her they were with a company called Chimney And Safe Homes and told her to write a check to their acronym -- C.A.S.H.
Luckily, her friend was there, and she talked her out of writing the check (she smelled a rat because she had been scammed weeks before). Of course, it turned out the oil company hadn't sent anyone to her home.
As always, be suspicious of random workers who come to your house. And be really suspicious of writing a check to companies called C.A.S.H.
