Rain. It's a great theme for a song, no? So many great songs incorporate it; many use it as a principal theme and even in their title.
Why is that? What about this mundane, everyday occurence makes it such a great theme for great songs?
What are your favorite rain songs?

How can one vote against "Singin' in the Rain" -- especially having seen the film?
Zeppelin's "Rain Song" must rate a podium position, even though I don't recall it being much about rain.
I'd tack on "Rain" by Tones On Tail (Bauhaus spin-off), recognising that it's somewhat obscure. But it does sound very dank, drippy and moist.

Poor word choice on my part, O Whiggly one. I meant in no way to impugn your wide-ranging and comprehensive selection.
What about-
Kathy's Song
Paul Simon, 1965
I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls
And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies
My mind's distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're alseep
And kiss you when you start your day
And a song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme
And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you
And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I
(I also love the eva cassidy remake)

No, no. I'm not complaining or being snappy. I'm saying that you can add to the poll, if you want to. I'm happy for there to be more choices and I don't suffer from poll-envy. :D

you fracture me
your hands on me
a touch so plain
so stale it kills
you strangle me
entangle me
in hopelessness and
prayers for rain

Not necessarily my favorite, but the first thing that came to mind was Here Comes The Rain Again, by The Eurythmics

Acid Rain by Liquid Tension Experiment - From one of my "writing music" CDs.
Raining Blood by Slayer and Euope After the Rain by Kreator - Two for those that like their rain heavy.
I Love a Rainy Night by Eddie Rabbit - Sorry, forgot this was meant to be for favourite rain song.
Love Reign O'er Me by The Who - It might be "Reign" in the title and the chorus, but throughout the verses there is a lot of "rain". And it's a great song.

I gotta rep you for bringing up LTE, Cletus. How about Phil Collins I Wish It Would Rain Down? (I can't believe I beat Chunky C to a Phil Collins reference!)

Why? Dunno. :D
Maybe because sadness, next to love, is one of the most powerful emotions and rain seems to evoke that?

'Cause rain reminds us of tears? 'Cause it comes from dark skies? 'Cause it ties in so well with the moods that cause tears?NO, NO! Rain is sexy. I love having my windows open, a breeze whishing through as the showerhead of thunder and lightning turn on to shower the earth.
Rain comes in so many varieties: stormy, tempestuous, soft, steady, sideways, soothing, lonesome, spitting, refreshing...
There's good song material/emotion in all those.

Yeah I'm a dork but...
Couldn't Stand The Weather has these lyrics:
Runnin' through this business of life,
rarely time if I'm needed to
Ain't so funny when things ain't feelin' right,
then daddy's hand helps to see me through
Sweet as sugar love won't wash away,
rain or shine, it always here to stay
All these years you and I've spent together,
all this, we just couldn't stand the weather
Like a train that stops at every station,
we all deal with trials and tribulations
Fear hangs the fellow that ties up his years,
entangled in yellow and cries all his tears
Changes come before we can grow,
learn to see them before we're too old
Don't just take me for tryin' to be heavy,
understand, it's time to get ready for the storm
Me Likey so what?

Hate me if you must but Rainy Days and Mondays deserves some recognition...
I can't help it. I always did like the Carpenters, even the Muzak versions of their songs always got to me.

It's Raining Men... Hallelujah!
Why rain? Rain's a versatile metaphor. Depression, sadness, excess, relief, inevitability, comfort -- it can symbolise a lot of different things. So it's handy. It's universal: everyone knows rain. And it's evocative: rain and rainy weather make people feel - wet, cold, cool, clean, refreshed, slaked.
And it looks cool in videos.

Rainy Day Women #12 & 35. Okay so it isn't about rain. Here I'll tell you a little story to make up for it.
Eight years after she'd begun to show symtoms, five years after she no longer recognized me, I was visiting my Mom at the Alzheimer's nursing home where she lived. I would bring cherry tootsie-pops (first soaking them in a cup of water to get the flavor going) for her to enjoy, but I couldn't let her bite the chewy center, because she might have choked on the tootsie roll part. It was a cloudy day but I pushed her (in her) wheelchair outside anyway, for a bit of fresh air. The disease was quite advanced (she died less than two years after this episode) and while she could still speak, it was limited to "yes" and "no" and "thank you". As we sat beneath a tree, a rain drop fell on her cheek. "Rain!" she said and she smiled. I just about jumped for joy. She was more or less oblivious to her surroundings otherwise, but damnit, she still knew a raindrop when she felt one!
In better days, long ago days, she would sit in the car when a rainstorm came, to better hear the patter of the raindrops on the roof. She loved the rain. Her favorite Rain Song was "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head"

Fire & Rain -- James Taylor
Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone.
Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you.
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song,
I just can't remember who to send it to.
I've seen fire and I've seen rain.
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend.
But I always thought I'd see you again.
Won't you look down upon me Jesus,
You've got to help me make a stand.
You've just got to see me through another day.
My body's aching and my time is at hand.
And I won't make it any other way.
I've seen fire and I've seen rain.
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend.
But I always thought I'd see you again.
Now I'm walking my mind to an easier time,
My back turned to the sun.
Lord knows when the cold wind blows
It'll turn your head around.
There's hours of time on the telephone line,
To talk about things to come.
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.
I've seen fire and I've seen rain.
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend.
But I always thought I'd see you again.
