The Dow and the Stock Exchange are not something I'm terribly familiar with - can someone help me out with this article?

What does it really mean?

Dow Jones board accepts Murdoch's buyout offer (http://tinyurl.com/2zlhs4)

The headline makes it seem like he's buying the Dow Jones ... that can't be right, can it?

a $5 billion cash buyout

for a measly $5 billion?

I'm pretty sure this Dow Jones is not the same as the one you're thinking of. From what I heard it is Dow Jones Publications, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal.

The New York Stock exchange (per Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stock_Exchange))

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), nicknamed the "Big Board", is a New York City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City)-based stock exchange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stock_exchange). It is the largest stock exchange in the world by dollar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_dollar) volume (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Market_capitalization) and the second largest by number of companies listed. Its share volume was exceeded by that of NASDAQ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASDAQ) during the 1990s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990s). The New York Stock Exchange has a global capitalization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Market_capitalization) of $25.0 trillion as of December 31 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_31), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stock_Exchange#_note-0)
The NYSE is operated by NYSE Euronext (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NYSE_Euronext), which was formed by its merger with the fully electronic stock exchange Archipelago Holdings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archipelago_Holdings) and Euronext (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euronext). The New York Stock Exchange trading floor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trading_room) is located at 11 Wall Street (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_Street), and is composed of four rooms used for the facilitation of trading. A fifth trading room, located at 30 Broad Street, was closed in February 2007. The main building, located at 18 Broad Street (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broad_Street_%28Manhattan%29) between the corners of Wall Street and Exchange Place (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchange_Place), was designated a National Historic Landmark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Historic_Landmark) in 1978.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stock_Exchange#_note-NHL_designation)
NYSE Group merged with Euronext (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euronext), and many of its operations (particularly IT and the trading platform) will be combined with that of the New York Stock Exchange and NYSE Arca (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NYSE_Arca).

The Dow Jones Industrials (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dow_Jones_Industrial_Average)are an index of stocks traded on the NYSE - further reading in the NYSE article and on the Dow Jones Industrials article will explain the connection and thus the potential for confusion.

Wikipedia also has an article on Dow Jones & Co (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dow_Jones_%26_Company).

Dow Jones & Company (NYSE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stock_Exchange): DJ (http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/lcddata.html?ticker=DJ)) is an American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) publishing and financial information firm.
The company was founded in 1882 by three reporters: Charles Dow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Dow), Edward Jones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Jones_%28statistician%29), and Charles Bergstresser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bergstresser). Like The New York Times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_York_Times) and the Washington Post (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Post), the company is publicly traded but privately controlled. The company is led by the Bancroft family (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bancroft_family), however on July 17, 2007 the Dow Jones board in a 14-1-2 vote recommended that share holders approve a buyout offer from News Corporation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/News_Corporation).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dow_Jones_%26_Company#_note-0)

He will keep the Stock Market 'fair and balanced' ...

They just report. 'You decide!"

I just hope they keep both Bill O'Reilly and Geraldo Rivera away from 'the numbers' ... because Geraldo still has that ticker tape addiction he fought in the 70's, and O'Reilly ... well, he just hates the liberal numbers '3' six and '9' ...
