Anybody besides me into things like Electronica, Darkwave, Industrial, Gothic Rock/Symphonic Rock, and so forth?

Some bands I'd really recommend checking out is Nightwish, Within Temptation, Emilie Autumn, Jack Off Jill, The Dresden Dolls (they're not gothic, but I love their cabaret style) London After Midnight, Theatre of Tragedy, Collide, and quite a few others... I just don't need to list all of those at the moment.

Sisters, the Mission, Joy Division...

But I'll second that rec for The Dresden Dolls. Excellent band.

Bauhaus/Tones on Tail/Love and Rockets. Mm.
And old Cure: the Seventeen Seconds and Pornography albums.
Southern Death Cult were lurvly too.

If you like it waaaay more ponderous, try Swans. (Too much for me.)

I think we might be giving away our advanced age. Bring me my (black) zimmerframe, minion!

Epica's a great band, so is Sonata Arctica. Kamelot's pretty good too.

And to the last post, yeah, My Chemical Romance falls under the Emo category of music. But hey, we like what we like. :)

And to Nakhlasmoke, I like Sisters of Mercy too. They're brilliant.

Ah, yeah, I forgot to mention Kamelot, but I've got their complete discography. I'll listen to them as soon as stupid computer lets me rescue it from the depths of its hard drive (ate all my files).

Emo! Burn the emo!! Hahaha ok maybe not. But be careful on the International Emo Kicking Day :D Ok, I'm a bad person.

Haha, personally I don't really like the emo scene either. I think it's ridiculous in my opinion, but hey, I'm not one to dictate to other people what they should or shouldn't wear, or what they should and shouldn't do. I just would never get involved with it--goth scene's for me. :)

I admit it. I like the new Voltaire. But the only bands I like from this thread are the old ones. :( I'm old.

Also I kick My Chemical Romance. Sorry, but there I was feeling all modern for finding a much younger man attractive; then it turns out their lead singer's only 2 years younger than me. Damnit! Turns out I'm old fashioned. But I admit to liking the music.

Hate the whole "Emo means emotive" thing though. WTF? So other genres aren't emotive? Makes no sense to me. I'm too old.

No, their new singer is terrible. She turned Nightwish from Symphonic Rock into crappy Pop Rock. You'd have to hear it for yourself to know what I mean.

I love Jack Off Jill, though I always just thought of them as hard rock. Of course, to me all rock music is either soft rock, hard rock, or metal (then there's pop rock, but I don't consider that music). Can you tell I know nothing about the music industry? :D For all I know, I listen to a lot of the music types you listed and don't even know it.

Lots of bands listed I've never heard of. I'll have to check them out, since I'm always looking for (and rarely finding) new music I like. Anymore recommendations?

I've heard of electronica and industrial, though I was never entirely sure what exactly they meant. Is Nine Inch Nails electronica? (They sound very 'electronic', but I may be taking the term too literally)

I think NIN would be considered either electronica or industrial. I'm not too sure, but I think it's either of the two.

When NIN first released Pretty Hate Machine, the Depeche Mode influence was really obvious, so I'd definitely class that album as electronica, later works were more industrial, but I don't think of NIN as an industrial band - Ministry is industrial to me.

Then again, I find country music really gothic in its themes, so don't listen to me, what do I know. :P

It's hilarious to listen to the With Sympathy album in the context of later Ministry. It makes even early Depeche Mode sound like Motorhead by comparison. (Put your drink down before you start up the player.)

She has a pretty voice. I'm listening to Eva right now, and even though I'm about to fall asleep from the lack of heavy guitars, I don't find anything officially wrong with the song.

Sonata Arctica is not goth rock.

It is power metal. Totally different. It's almost as silly, but at least with guys like SA, you get some interesting guitar work.

I know, but the OP said that it didn't have to be goth rock, just something of the sort. Sonata Arctica is the best... have you heard their song Broken? Or Shy? The End of This Chapter? My Land?

Put me down as Old School (actually listening to a demo for Dominion/Mother Russia at the mo). Sisters, Mission, Joy Division, Cure, early NIN.

Any takers for Fields of the Nephilim? The Damned? Alien Sex Fiend?

Anybody remember Rosetta Stone???

Not goth, but they pop up on one or two goth compilations: New Model Army.

Fields... YES. "The Nephilim" is a great, great, GREAT album.
And The Damned? I must have, oh, twenty of theirs. Brilliant. (Not entirely goth, but one of my favorites ever.)
Don't know much about ASF other than "Now I'm Feeling Zombified". That's a gap in my learnin'.

I have one old NMA album with "Frightened" on it. I'll pull it out again when it's safe to bring the turntable out of hiding from inquisitive toddler hands.

I don't argue she has a pretty voice, but I just think her talents don't do well with a band like Nightwish. I liked the operatic voice of Tarja a lot better, and thought it fit the mood of the songs a lot better, making it, in my opinion, more epic in sound.

But hey, that's just my opinion. :)

Nah, you're just making up excuses because, in your mind, Tarja and Nightwish were born together and are meant to be together, so no one will ever reach her level. You're on the same boat as a lot of Nightwish fans.

I really don't think you have any right to tell me what I think. And the lead singer, the new one, for Nightwish--isn't her name Annette? I know she's gone, but I really did think her voice sounded better with the music.

Please, respect my opinions--don't tell me what I think.

I think Dama's post was meant to be poking a bit of fun, the smilies were a give away.

Moving on, yep, not goth at all but NMA are wonderful,. Then again, we can draw all sorts of lines about what qualifies something as goth. - Some will argue that the Cure, Souixse, Sisters of Mercy etc, are goth. Those same bands will tell you they're not. *shrug*

Lets add Nick Cave to the list. Pimp-daddy goth ftw!

Hahaha sorry, I was poking fun at you :) I didn't think you'd take it too personally, since I'm not really the kind of person you should take too seriously. And yes, the new girl's name is Annette. Frankly, Tarja's name is cooler, if nothing else :D *runs away*

So, can anyone recommend something a little heavier?? Something like death metal in music but not in vocals?

Maybe some older stuff -- not exactly metal, but heavy heavy feedback:
- My Bloody Valentine, Loveless
- The Jesus and Mary Chain, Psycho Candy

Hahahaha don't worry, I often get myslef into trouble for joking around too much :D I'm a goof. And, well, my humor is Mexican humor, which isn't really fit for everyone. We're odd, irreverent and make fun of anyone and anything, even when other people would find it offensive. It takes a lot of getting used to, so I don't blame you.

I'll get to checking out the bands!!

Well, it's not death metal but some later Killing Joke stuff is a little bit heavy with "normal" vocals. Personally I prefer the earlier stuff, but it ain't heavy.

This thread has gone beyond the strict bounds of goth music so here are some of my favorites.

Type O Negative is one of my favorite bands of all time and combine gothrock/metal and hardcore sounds. Peter Steele has a very deep voice which is pretty impressive with it's vampiric heaviness...but the guy can also belt it out with the best of them. All the guys sing but when you become familiar with the band you can pick out Steele pretty easily and he is a wonder.

Bauhaus is one of the greats...but Love and Rockets are better.

Ministry isn't goth but they are dark and have some gothish, moody pieces within their catalog. Another of my all time favorites.

Dead Can Dance might be goth in a way sortof maybe...but they are one of the all time great bands wherever you place them.

Fugazi was mentioned...not goth but one of the greatest rock bands ever.

Has anyone here heard the gothic Christmas records? I heard one years ago where a band whose name I forgot covers the song the Whos down in Whoville from the Grinch sing...the 'Pah who dorays pah who doress welcome Christmas christmas time' however you would spell their lyrics. I'm a Gothic/Industrial gogo diva in the NYC scene. Right now, I'm addicted to "Forever" by Necessary Response. Absolutely hooked. I have to admit, though, that I thought that he was Assemblage 23 at first. If you like that style of music, you should check them out.
