For your general edification:

WaPo story is here (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/27/AR2007062701325_pf.html).

"After we learned from Jim Comey about the late-night hospital visit to John Ashcroft (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/John+Ashcroft?tid=informline)'s bedside, it was even more imperative that we find out the who, what, how and why surrounding the wiretapping of Americans without warrants," said Sen. Charles E. Schumer (http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/s000148/) (D-N.Y.).

The Judiciary Committee, seeming frustrated by what Leahy called "stonewalling" of its requests for information, approved the subpoenas last week. Three Republicans joined Democrats in the 13 to 3 vote to authorize the subpoenas.

"The bipartisan support for issuing these subpoenas demonstrates that both Democrats and Republicans are fed up with the misleading statements from the attorney general and the administration about this illegal program," said Sen. Russell Feingold (http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/f000061/) (D-Wis.), a member of the committee.

I am assuming that the thread title "Congress challenges power-mad psychos Bush and Cheney" was already taken.

You know, I thought really hard about that one, Tour -- I thought I better leave it for you, when they actually DO something besides posture and wave fistfuls of paper around. :)

I have to admit, I'm sort of morbidly fascinated by the idea of shadowy figures gathered around Ashcroft's bed, late at night, guiding his palsied hand....it's like something out of the Borgia's history.

I was in Key West that day. I have hotel and restaurant receipts.

She said "Shadowy figures," not "guys with perpetual five-o-clock shadow."

This is going to lead to the most interesting showdown regarding the separation of powers that this country has ever seen.

Unless Bush's appointees to the Supreme Court decide to support virtually limitless power for the Executive branch, then Bush is set to lose this confrontation.

Unless, of course, the Democrats back down again.

Yes.

This will lead to nothing.

As usual.

Like the Plame thing and the that thing and the this thing and the that thing.

They all just dissipate into the ether and Bush, Cheney and Rove keep marching on.

Thank you.
