I have to mail myself something, so that I can access it from work, where I have a printer.

My computer isnt set up to download anything onto CD or disc. And my email account is not set up here-don't ask.

So, I want to mail a portion of a short fiction story that I am working on to my work account.

Here's my Jerry-rigged Idea.

1) If someone here is willing, I will send it to you as a P.M.

2) You can cut it and paste it, and PM it back to me. I will then copy it off of the P.M onto my computer at work.

I know, this makes me sown like an idiot, but a rather creative idiot. So, if you are willing just say so. Obviously, I will choose someone in case multiple people respond.

It is not edited, but you might find it an interesting read. Thanks.

Nate, why don't you just PM it to yourself?

Re:

Speaking of Jerry Rigged, wasn't he supposed to show up here with his buddy, Justin Time? i've been standing around with their buddy, Justin Case, but i don't see 'em.

i'm starting to wonder if this is all a prank by our mutual friend, Justin Jest...

What an interesting way to find a reader. Did you get a nibble, yet?

Nate, I'll do it if you still need.

Re: Thanks- and another question.

I didn't realize that you could send yourself a message on this forum. On other boards, I wasn't able to do that.

Other than the fact that my paragraph breaks disappeared, I was able to successfully leave the story.

Question: I know that a publisher of books will copywrite your story for you. Is this the same with Magazines? Do I need to copywrite the story before I submit it?

If so, do you know how this is done?

Re: Thanks- and another question.

This article might have the answer you are looking for. If not, then you might want to post the question on the Freelance forum.

I'm glad things worked out for you. I still think it was an interesting way to find readers. :)

Your story is copyrighted the moment you write it. It's registration you're thinking about, and there's no reason on earth to bother doing it yourself.

Re: Thanks- and another question.

What you give up to a magazine are specific rights to a story. You retain copyright, but you might sell them 1st North American serial rights, or one time rights, reprints rights etc.

Rights

Well, let me ask this. If I am using some short stories related to the book I'm writing, would that cause a problem down the road?

I figured I could use some short stories to introduce the novels that I hope to publish. They'd be stand alone stories, but characters would be introduced, and themes.

I wish I was so wise! Nah, this is just the convoluted types of things that an ADHD person does on the fly.

I was that kid who didn't have waterproof boots for the snow, or gloves, so I rigged up plastic garbage bags over my sneakers, and wore socks over my hands, instead of gloves. I just wanted to go out and play, and a little thing like garments weren't going to stop me.

This is just my answer to the obvious, "Get your stinking computer fixed!" Nothing more. But hey, if people are curious to see the rough draft, they are welcome.

A few people offered, but since I found out that I could mail it to myself, I didn't send the draft to anyone.

I was concerned about posting things on the board, in terms of proof of ownership, if you are planning to publish it?

Nope. The only possible problem I could foresee would be if you sold "all rights" to the story. But most writers fiercely resist selling all rights unless the pay is astronomical. What you might have to do if the stories were printed before the book is released is mention that in the wee print portion of the book - something like: "Some characters and scenes of this book were first published in the short story ____ which appeared in _____ magazine."

Re: Rights

Thanks for the input everyone. You are all great in my book!

Nate.
