My first book, I listened to the movie soundtrack of Rent ad nauseum. Now I download from iTunes and throw things into a strange mix of Barry Manilow, Billy Joel, Matchbox 20, Kelly Clarkson, Norah Jones, and Elvis Costello, and anything from American Idol. Of course, I am a bit odd...

I swear this isn't intended to hijack the thread (anyone who knows me from OP will probably know why), but most of my writing is done to soundtrack of "Gladiator". Just hearing that music puts me in "writing mode" almost immediately.

I use People Seized with Life for sad sad sad scenes that I'm writing--also from Chrono Cross.

I use classical (no words while writing for me!) and set moods. I use longer pieces like O Fortuna (Carmina Burana--Carl Orff) or Wagner (Flight of the Valkyries) Verdi (Requiem mass--the Dies Irae is awesome) and Mozart (pretty much anything, although the Confutatis in the Requiem Mass is ammmmmmmmmmmmmazing)

oh, and fight music? *grin* John Williams. Duel of the Fates and Anakin vs. Obi-Wan. Just don't write about lightsabers and they're kick butt for fight scenes--the tempo just works for it.

Apocalyptica. Look for their album "Metallica Played By Four Cellos" (or it may be "Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos"). Turn the bass boost on and enjoy. Their music is unique, darkly beautiful, and possesses an unpeered sense of wonder.

I listen to mostly soundtracks. Good ones to get too are the soundtrack buddies (that's what I call 'em). Those're the companions to the original soundtrack, the ones with collections of songs played during the movie that weren't written for the movie. - these are the ones that usually have "various artists" listed as the artist on amazon.com and stores like that.

Phantom of the Opera soundtrack (Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, of course) also, depending on the story and the scene and everything.

Pride and Prejudice soundtrack. Excelllllent music.

I like anything that is instrumental or soothing. Enya is great to write to and I love movie soundtracks (original scores that is.) They have a lot of drama and passion and it's easy to get into the mood. I agree with Thethinker42. Gladiator is great to write to but my personal favorites are Braveheart, Pearl Harbor and Titanic.

You can't go wrong with "William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, Volume 2." It's the score for Baz Lurhman's version, and it has a little bit of everything.

Some game soundtracks are great. For sad, try Final fantasy 7: Aeris' theme. It's so so sad. It made me cry when I heard it in the game, it was sad scene too.

My favorite work: Brahms' Requiem.

I think the edition produced by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (conducted by Robert Shaw) is the best rendition ever produced.

Yeah, that's great, joymark. The Fauré requiem is also very special, more gentle, but incredibly lovely.

Also, I'd suggest, for solo piano listening, Bach's Goldberg Variations (get the Glenn Gould recording--there are two, early one is fast and brilliant, late one is slow and introspective) a set of thirty-two variations. A wonderful piece (and peace) for the brain.

Lately I've been listening to the soundtrack for Shadow of the Colossus when I write. I can't believe I forgot just how good the music to this game is. The ambiant themes are beautiful and so haunting. The battle themes are amazing; each of the sixteen colossi have their own theme, and each is perfectly suited. You really feel the sense of adventure and the epic scale.
