How to Put an Independant Film in Theaters?

This is a purely hypothetical question, as I am nowhere near the situation.

Say I.M. Famous creates and produces his own independent film - and eventually shooting, post-production and all are completed.

Through what channels and means does he get his film to be displayed in movie theaters? I'm sure the process is unbelievable vast and complex, and if there are any websites or books to which you could refer me I'd be grateful.

You're right – it's incredibly complicated. Usually, if it's someone that famous, distribution deals will be in the works before post-production is complete, but there are always those that get picked up from the festival circuit.

Sadly, knowing roughly how it works only leads to more befuddlement. Things like foreign pre-sales and which domestic rights to sell and which to negotiate with are insane.

I'm deliberately ignoring all this with the project I'm developing right now. I don't think I could actually write the thing if I thought at all about the future.
