View Full Version : Looking for a substitute

Dag blasted... is that a word or did I make it up entirely?

To be honest, I'm looking for substitutions for god d-mned that would be common in a small, Mayberry-esque town. Something that isn't cussing per se, but could be used as an exclamation... hope that makes sense!

Wow, there is nothing that can't be found on-line. How did we ever do research without this?

It depends--what's the context? If another person is telling a sob story, "Well bless your heart!" is often heard.

However, if it's something personal, like a stubbed toe or getting divorce papers, this is the perfect opportunity for characterization. I've never heard two people use the same alternative cuss words (my favorite is "ack", which, for some reason, everyone gets a kick out of).

Hells Bells! :0

My mother used to use this a lot.

And if she was REALLY P.O.'d it would be extended to, "HELLS BELLS AND BUCKETS OF TEETH!"

And no, I have no idea why or where it came from.
