With a non-partisan view of the upcoming election, I was thinking what to expect politically in 2009. I don't foresee a magical transformation, nor miracle solutions to international relations. There was a hypothetical terrorist situation in the debate last night, kind of got my wheels turning.

My one big assumption here is that we will be well into scaling back US military presence in Iraq (for better or worse), and that there haven't been successful terrorist attacks since. Knowing that militant terrorists will still be looking to target American and western interests, what should be the priority for the new administration?

Repairing international relations? Do Muslim nations get a new diplomatic push, or do we focus on bruised allies?

Does homeland security finally get an accurate assessment?

Does immigration policy get overhauled to track domestic terrorists? Does immigration security get stalled by complications of other immigration issues?

How does the US (and especially the UK) contain the sentiment that breeds homegrown terrorists?

How does Iraq become a stable state, Islamic or Democratic, or somewhere in between?

Can Iraq be stable, or is it in the interest of provocateurs that it self-destructs? Can the moderate Iraqis take back their country? Does the violence get exported regionally or internationally?

Dammit Matt.

Every so often you throw a post out there like this that requires about an hour to answer.

I'll get back to this eventually.

I honestly believe that by the year 2020, Mexico and the United States will merge into a single governmental entity. My guess is that the word Mexico will remain in the name of the new country.

I will weep, and then move back to Virginia and plot "Secession II: This Time It's Personal, Hombre"

Just thought I'd spark an exchange that doesn't break down to two camps essentially telling momma jokes about the other side (at least not until page 2).
