You know, watching this season's After The Catch is interesting, because those boys up in Gloucester, Mass, have a seriously hard job too. The stories those guys tell are just as amazing as our crab-dudes in the Bering Sea.
I just loved the chopper pilot who came on at the end. She's awesome, but she's like "oh it's just all in a day's work" about it.
Am I the only one glad to see Moi finally getting off the Wizard? Let's hope Cooper "I brought you a Cup O Noodles" Weatherby has a better time on deck.

The whole drama with Phil is amazing...hope he's okay! In the ATC promo, he mentioned that two more weeks would decide his fate. Hang in there, Phil!

You aren't kidding. In an odd twist, my FIL was diagnosed with a blod clot in his arm the same week Capt. Phil went into the hospital... talk about spooky

So glad to find this thread on Deadliest Catch. Fantastic show. I thought nothing could top last season's (was it last season?) rogue wave. How amazing and scary that the thing was caught on tape. Crazy. Or maybe, Jonathan Hillstrand trying to maneuver his boat out of the ice. That was tense.
Human drama seems to be dominating this season. Phil's health, Keith's temper and those crazy Hillstrand brothers make for great television. Jonathan is an accident waiting to happen. Between falling off the dock and getting a busted nose at sea, it's a miracle he's made it this far.
I find Phil the saltiest and surliest of the bunch. We know he pulls through this blood clot, but I hope he can kick the smokes.
By the way, anyone have thoughts on the musical vignettes they've added this year? They seemed unnecessary and distracting to me at first. But they've kind of grown on me.
Anyway, if you didn't see it, here's a link to a nice NYT article about the show. enjoy:

For anyone who dosen't think that The Deadliest Catch and one of its crews: The F/V Northwestern are the finest group of people ever, well then you should read this (http://www.fvnorthwestern.com/2008/08/06/i-wish-to-meet-the-seattle-crew-of-discovery-channel%E2%80%99s-world%E2%80%99s-deadliest-catch/).
I hadn't visited the Northwestern's site in a long time, and I was so proud of my favorite crew when I read how they made one very sick boy's dream come true. They, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation are truly heroes to me.

I'm a little bummed that Capt. Phil's still not 100% - and it looks like there'll be plenty of drama this season. It started a little slow, but it should (hopefully) pick up. :)

It was okay. but I'm getting tired of the soap opera aspect of it. I like the show to be about crab fishing. Not sit on shore and talk, talk, talk.
I thought what was more interesting watching what was happening on the Wizard than listening to the constant blah, blah, blah about this that and the other thing.

I felt bad for him too, just standing there as the boat pulled away. It's amazing what the cameramen go through to get those shots. I'd be in the bathroom the whole time. Once the trip was over I'd exit the boat weighing about 20lbs lighter and no longer have a stomach attached.

I felt like the Phil thing was a "set-up." By that I mean, they knew darn well that Phil wasn't going to be able to fish BEFORE he went up there.
Which ticks me off. Because when it started, this was a pretty "real" reality show. Now I feel like we've got a script going on.
And the other Captain just HAPPENED to be getting HIS biopsy news just before they pulled from the harbor??? Seriously? What are the odds? Especially for BOTH of them due to get important health news while sitting on the boats in the harbor? If I tried to pull that in a book, my editor would yell at me for being "contrived."
<sigh> It pains me to feel this way about the show, because I love these guys!

Anchorage has a great hospital. I was sent there when I needed cardiac care when we lived in Fairbanks. I'm sure Phil will receive the best care possible.
When he had the pulmonary emboli, I knew a CVA was a distinct posibility. If he's having trouble with clots, it's easy for one to break loose from the lungs and travel to the brain.
I'm praying for him and his family.

the only "good" thing is that it happened while they were in port, according to the website.
I'm sure it would have been much, much worse if it had happened at sea and they had to airlift him out.

From the Cornelia Marie website (http://www.corneliamarie.com/):
"Last night Capt. Phil underwent surgery. Both of his sons, Josh and Jake were at his side. Josh flew in from St. Paul to join his brother. It may be some time before we know anything substantial about Phil’s condition. Thank you to everyone who has sent good wishes and prayers for Phil, his family and the Cornelia Marie crew.
An old family friend of the F/V Cornelia Marie, Derek Ray flew to St. Paul to take on the role of relief skipper for the rest of the Opilio season."

UPDATE February 3, 2010: No one ever said Captain Phil Harris wasn't tough. Today, dad showed some good signs of improvement, squeezing our hands and even summoning his trademark Captain's bluntness by telling the doctors and nurses, "Don't f*ck up." We are encouraged but still very cautious. It is a long road ahead, but its made more bearable and comforting knowing your thoughts and prayers are with us. We are strong because of you -- our fans. Thanks and we will continue to update you as best we can going forward.

Looks like Jake was arrested in his dad's BMW on drunk driving charges and hit and run. It seems like his license was suspended. I know the kid must be torn up about his father, but he should have known better. Phil would probably give him a good pounding.

I was determined to watch these last episodes of the season, knowing they were Captain Phil's last. I was also curious as to how Discovery would handle it, but I had read something about Phil himself wanting to keep the cameras rolling, and given that I think they did a wonderful job.
Really hard, though, those last shots of Phil still alive when everybody was so hopeful and I knew he wouldn't make it. I am glad he got in some good time with his boys before his time ran out, that he was able to tell them he was proud of them.
I don't know how Jake is going to make it -- even if. He seems very self-destructive. It always surprised me a bit that Phil was convinced Jake would be the one to be Captain one day rather than Josh.
Maybe he saw more of himself in that turbulent kid.
I thought it was great, and moving, that Jonathan stuck around while Phil was in the hospital.
Anyway, I've also been watching After the Catch, and love all the comments and stories about Phil. Love the way the other captains so obviously feel a sense of responsibility for Phil's boys. Loved the New Orleans sendoff.
Now I'm going to go to Discovery and order myself one of those Captain Phil tee shirts ...

I'm amazed at myself for becoming so attached to all of these people after watching Deadliest Catch from the very beginning. I thought Discovery have handled Captain Phil's death beautifully and with tremendous respect. One of the most moving things on 'After the Catch' this week was hearing Todd, the cameraman speak about his friendship with Phil. Todd is clearly a rough and tough sort himself and probably not given to being all emotional. His tribute was sweet, touching and funny, especially the whole thing about him going out of his way to be obnoxiously cheerful in the mornings.
I thought the New Orleans send-off was perfect and very fitting.
