In keeping with your caption-themed thread...
Bobo the monkey didn't mean to fling poo at the party guests and the birthday boy, ClockWork 9 -- How was Bobo to know the cake had been spiked with rum. He'd never live this gig down! Oh well....there'd always be Reno and the Circus Circus.

Hey! Happy Birthday!:D

Hi everyone. Thanks so much for the kind birthday wishes. What's that? A speech, you say? Oh, I couldn't possibly. No! Oh... all right then, hand me the mic.
Thank you, thank you very much. You know, March marks my second year as a member of AW. I've seen a lot of people pass through these halls in that time. Some have come, some have gone. More have come than gone. But not as many have stayed. Some have simply remained motionless. And of course, some have endlessly twirled and fluttered. Because AW is a dynamic place where things can change quite quickly. But a lot stays the same. If nothing happens.
And yet, despite that, so much of AW is familiar to us, allowing a collective experience of the wonder of life. Birds fly. Fish swim. Dogs dig in the yard and a rainbow of brightly-coloured frisbees soar freely. Here at AW, the symbolism continues as green online user lights shine like beacons in the dark, reminding us that in this sea of electronic emptiness, we are never truly alone. Life flourishes in the pages of the forum - just as an old thread dies, a new one is given life. And the backgrounds are always that off-shade of bluey-purple.
But most importantly, AW is a community of people - a curious scrapbook of usernames, post counts and cat avatars. A place where everybody knows your name. But... not your real name. Maybe just your first name. Well, as close to your real name as you can get without filling out a form. And as much as we are singular personalities, we are also a whole. We are a group, a colony. A hustling bivouac of army ants, clawing over each other's flaying antennae as we careen through the maddening jungle thicket of the world-wide web.
And on this momentous day, March 5th, in between the hedonistic and dizzying celebration of whoever's birthday it may be, I feel it only right that we pause, if only briefly to consider the future of AW. Like it or not, the world will change and AW must change with it too. The posts and threads of the future will not be as we know them now - with keyboards and mice - but with extra-sensory perception laser headsets. Or possibly advancements in the field of trackballs. In either case, most of the topics will be contributed by message-posting robots. And as we surge towards the 22nd century, our purpose is clear - to find and destroy those robots.
Thank you for your time and kind consideration.

May you receive all the C-4 you asked for...but not in your cake.
Have a happy!!!
(Laser pulse pistols should do it for most of the robots...)

he speaks of mythology
from forgotten time
placed by gods to the heavens,
and he shines,
a star in this constellation
with unflinching twinkle
he is constant,
to map your path.
he makes clear
the unseen and feared
lantern on a wooded path
he shines and footfalls
land on solid ground
by his glow.
he says, "I am here"
with a soft flicker beacon
spreading through the night's black air
shining in the window, waiting
a welcome to warm cold hearts.
he leads the way,
from rough seas to shores;
lighthouse in a storm
for safe passage.
Happy Birthday Chris, you bright and shining friend!

Oh, you got a candid shot of me doing the finishing touches on your cake! I had to guess at the flavor.
Yeah, that's right, I lied. I'm not really a brunette. So sue me.
Maryn, wishing you a happy birthday

Thanks for the extra kind words that you guys have posted. I've had a pretty quiet day (my dad and uncle are both working away and this is the first birthday since my grandad died) so to be honest, it's probably for the best. I had a nice dinner with my mum and brother (the other two brothers are also away) and tonight I ain't doin' nothin'. There is major cause for celebration today though - this was the last Monday I will have to work in a long time. That feels good.
I wanted to share a present I got from my folks - it's a giant wall print, a good six feet in length of the image below. I posted it as big as I can so you can get the same impression I have staring at it. It's an image taken from a satellite orbiting Mars of the Earth and the moon (top of the image) and Jupiter (bottom of the image.) I fell in love with it when I first saw it because I couldn't get over just how isolated and precious the earth seems, floating in a sea of utter blackness. But even in that unending void, we've got our own nieghbours and Jupiter (however far away it is) is one of many that is right there with us.
Thanks again to everyone who wished me a happy birthday. Those who didn't can cram it with walnuts. :tongue
03-06-2007, 01:46 AM
Happy Birthday, Chris!!! :D
03-06-2007, 01:47 AM
Yeah, all right. No walnuts for you.
(Thanks, Freckles. :D)

Many, many more, Chris.
