We're here! On our own, brand-new server. It's soo exciting!
There's bound to be problems.
If you encounter any errors or glitches, report them here. To help out the techies:
1. Copy and paste any error message you receive here.
2. State the last thing you clicked on pre-error.
3. Describe what you were doing in as much detail as possible when the error occurred. (We promise you won't get in trouble.)

The system won't let me change my customer avatar. I go into the UserCP, select Edit Avatar, use the browse function to select the saved file (one I've used since the beginning of June), click save changes and get this message:
Unable to save avatar
Again, it's the chi avatar I've been using since the Dark Days, so the sizes should be fine.

I keep having connectivity problems, where I'll be posting, refreshing or trying to open another forum, and the system tells me that it's basically not there. I am a bad problem poster, though, because I didn't copy down the error message. (This could easily be my local DSL connectivity issue, though I seem to be fine elsewhere, not the site, but I mention it just in case.)
Great job, all the way around. The minor glitches have been just that, minor, and you're all to be congratulated! Thanks for taking such good care of us!

Almost nothing is there when I try to access it. I keep getting error message 500. For example, I couldn't access page 2 of the Science Fiction Forum, the search function didn't work for me, I had to quote the previous poster here because the reply button didn't work. All with Error Message 500, basically saying the web site's not there. Hopefully, this message will work.

In regards to those of you who are clicking through to dead links: can you copy & paste the specific URL that's giving the error message?

Got a new one for you -- I can't link/open up a window from the site any more. As in, if someone puts a url for an agent's site up on Bewares, I can't click on it. I get a box that says that I may have pop-ups blocked, but when I go to allow popups, it changes nothing and I also don't get a website name to add to my "allows" file. I can open/link from any other Explorer or Opera window (I use both), so I think it may be a site issue.
Not having the slow connection issues any more, but if I do I will remember to get the url for which page I was on.

A lightbulb just went off over my head ... when we moved before, a number of you had trouble accessing the forums until you put the Absolute Write IP address into a file on your computer known as the 'hosts' file.
You will need to either remove that entry, or update it to use the new IP address. I'll be back when I can dig up the old instructions, I want to make sure I have it all right. But I wanted to give you the heads up right away.

This is for anyone who had to put an entry in their hosts file the last time we changed servers:
===================================
Open Windows Explorer
Click on C: drive
Hold down Ctrl key and hit F key
In the search for files or folders type hosts
Right click on hosts file (if you see more than one, you want the one in the windows/system32/drivers/etc folder
click Open
It should bring up a box asking you which program you'd like to open it with - select notepad
The last line should have an IP address (bunch of numbers and periods) and the word localhost
On the next line, type 69.13.227.201 then hit the tab key and type www.absolutewrite.com
If you already have a line for absolutewrite, just replace the IP address with the one above.
Go to the file menu up top, click on it and save it
Close it all out, clear your cookies and browser cache, then you should be ready to go.

About 50% of the time, when I load a page, I get stuff like this:

When I hit reload, it loads fine. It just started happening today.

And I get this one a lot:
HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2006 04:00:59 GMT Server: Apache/1.3.37 (Unix) PHP/5.1.6 mod_ssl/2.8.28 OpenSSL/0.9.8d X-Powered-By: PHP/5.1.6 Cache-Control: private Pragma: private Location: http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/search.php?searchid=1125795 Keep-Alive: timeout=15, max=98 Connection: Keep-Alive Transfer-Encoding: chunked Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 0
When this one comes up, I can't get reload to work and have to find a different way to the page. (Like going through the forum instead of New Posts.)
It hasn't happened with any other site.

I have to keep retrying about 3-8 times to get a page to load. I've never had this happen before, nor does it happen on anyother website. Here's the error message:
Error 500 'www.absolutew...' Unknown Host.
Try reloading the Web page.
Retype the address in your browser.
Check your computer's Internet connection.
search Try searching:
http://o.aolcdn.com/aolsearch/img070071/btn_search.gif (javascript:document.searchForm1.submit())
The url that gives this message is simply the url I'm trying to get to (i.e. www.absolutewrite.com/forums (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums) or whichever post I try to read. It's very annoying.

Diana are you using AOL?
This is, I think, a DNS or Domain Name Service issue; the DNS is a gigantic list, a copy of which resides on servers at every single ISP, that relates the network address of a particular domain, that is something.com or something.net, etc, with its name and with the ISP that is actually hosting the domain. As part of the move, AW changed the DNS record, and that change needs to be reflected on every single ISP's list. It takes a while.
AOL also does local caching of popular sites, so it's a little slower. I note AOL doesn't work for me either, in terms of reaching AW.
I know it's frustrating, but time will cure this one.
And I'm glad to see you :D

Screenmom that's an annoying glitch, and, well, I don't have a fix.
What does usually work is
1. Bookmark in your browser, or open in Windows or Tabs the threads you want to be subscribed
2. Unsubscribe from all of 'em
3. Leave the CP
4. Go back to the CP
5. Resubscribe
Sorry I can't wave a wand; I would if I could.

Hi everyone,
There seems to be a problem with the database as I try to access certain threads. I originally tried to access the 'Writing Erotica' section, and I could not get it to work. I pressed the 'Stop' button on my browser and tried again.
The second time I tried, it still did not work, and I had to press the 'Stop' button on my browser again.
The third time I clicked on the link, I got the 'There seems to be a problem with the Databas' error message.
After this, I went to the main forums page from my favorites in IE, and from there I tried my User Control Panel. I got the same message.
After that, I got the message no matter what link I clicked, and finally I let it sit for a couple minutes before clicking the link to the main forums page and everything works fine now.
