I think because of people to whom the concept is still fairly new and un-tapped, that the vampire/angel novels will be around for a while yet. I know I personally have read only one novel of that persuasion and a couple short shorts, and that's it. Because it's still a new idea to me personally, I can see myself reading more of them, if only because the idea is still fresh to me.

Don't think so. If they are well done and the characters are entertaining, you can never have too many. Very fond of vampire novels personally.

Bizarrely, I don't really read vampire/angel novels in fantasy (I likes my magic with a dose of dragons), but I can't get enough vampire stuff in paranormal romance. As long as its a well done book, I don't care if the subgenre has been done to death (or...undeath!).

Part of the appeal for me is with vampires, you can play on the not quite human aspect (and also on the 'darker nature'), which is wonderful to write about and wonderful fun to read about. It's an entertaining theme, and when I pick up a vampire novel, I'm looking to be entertained; it doesn't matter if its the fiftieth vampire novel I've read.

I try and avoid any book with angels, vampires, dragons, goblins, elves, and any other tolkienish/norse creatures that keep coming up. There are a few exceptions, but for experienced fantasy/sci-fi readers, cliche's are just painful to read. Amateurs on the other hand are comfortable reading them since they don't know any better.

I don't care for angels in fantasy* because to me they aren't fantasy; they're real. It's less bothersome in an alternate-world setting, but otherwise, no, not for me.

Oh, I don't know. I tend to buy into the idea that, "There's nothing new under the sun." I think what's new about a book is what you do with an old idea, and not the idea itself.

For example, I haven't read Wicked yet, but it's on my list. It's an old story that's been done a million times, but it's twisted a new way. Those are my favorite kind of stories. Perspective can change everything.

I'm tired of vampire erotic fiction, but I wouldn't mind reading a different type of story with a vampire in it. I recently read Vampire Huter D (only the first book was enjoyable), which is a western-style, sci-fi, vampire story. I rather liked it.

I've actually never read a published novel about angels that wasn't Christian Fiction. Maybe they're out there. I haven't seen them, which is why I decided to toy with Enoch.

I'm in the middle of WICKED right now and I can tell you it's not like anything I've read before. Gregory Maguire weaves a story so beautiful that I want to just crawl inside and live in his books. I hope you enjoy it as much as I am, when you get to it.

Gosh, I hated it. None of the characters seemed sympathetic except the goat professor, and you know what happened to him. Just not my cup of tea. I'm happy for Maguire that he has a readership, but I'm not among it.

Uhm...I certainly hope not!

But again, I think what I'm doing with it us sort of unlike what has been done before. At least I hope.

And my 'angels/demons' certainly aren't Christian fiction in any way. The only real religion discussed in the books is one character that calls herself "Wiccan" and she's a minor character.

Though, the fourth book will most likely have a discussion about 'heaven/hell' and the 'afterlife' with the 'angel' character.

Me, I like angels. Then again, one figures prominently in my second novel, so I'm rather biased.

As for vampires...well, when they're done differently, then I really enjoy them.

Vampire stories can be good or bad, it all depends on the writer. I like them if they are done different, not the same ole same ole.

Angels is the same way, if done different they can be really good. The series I have deals with Angels and Demons and armageddon but it isn't like anything you would expect. I throw in all the stories of the bible, or most i should say, a lot of human history and mythology and weave them all into one series. It's kinda like the Left Behind series meets Stargate but without the Stargate.

Nope. Not by a long shot. Myself, I've never read an "angel" story, but I do enjoy all the urban fantasies out there with vampires.

Of course it depends on how they're written. But there seems to be an obsession with vampires, and trying to make vampires "regular joes", and regular joes who wish they WERE vampires. What kind of thing is that to idolize? But, yeah, people are free to do whatever.

I never deliberately wanted to contribute to the heap. But I did have a vampire astronomer in one story who fit the role just right. We can't rule them (or anything else) out entirely.

A previous significant other of mine was a vampire fan to the "desperate wannabe" level...she was so freakin' obsessed with vampires I began to wonder if it had something to do with the fact that she just wanted to rebel against her strict religious upbringing.

TANGENT ALERT: Which was odd that she didn't "allow" me to read Forgotten Realms novels, since they were based on a D&D campaign, and D&D was Satanic, but she could read all the crappy vampire novels she could get her hands on.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...now that I can discover the genre on my own without hearing word-for-word about EVERY book she would read, I rather like vampiric stuff. The problem is, so much of the vampire stuff out there is either really bad erotica or really bad secret-society stuff...in the movies they add kung-fu to either.

So no, we haven't had enough vampire fiction...because most of it's BAD.

As for angels, those beings in secular fiction is a recent phenom it would seem. Neil Gaiman was the first fantasy author I'm aware of to use angels as characters.

Its a small role, sort of like a "They are a part of the world, but a small part."

I have angels in two of my stories (although they're slightly more prominent in the first one), but that's because Hell comes with it's own fallen angels.

I think people are tired of cliches, and that's where the backlash against vamps and angels comes in, but even then, a good writer with a strong story can take the most cliched idea of a vamp, and turn it into something interesting.

If you want to write about them, i say go for it.
