View Full Version : Dick Cheney, Flip-Flopper

In 1992, Dick Cheney, as SecDef explained why Bush Senior didn't invade Iraq:
I would guess if we had gone in there, I would still have forces in Baghdad today. We'd be running the country. We would not have been able to get everybody out and bring everybody home.
And the final point that I think needs to be made is this question of casualties. I don't think you could have done all of that without significant additional U.S. casualties, and while everybody was tremendously impressed with the low cost of the (1991) conflict, for the 146 Americans who were killed in action and for their families, it wasn't a cheap war.
And the question in my mind is, how many additional American casualties is Saddam (Hussein) worth? And the answer is, not that damned many. So, I think we got it right, both when we decided to expel him from Kuwait, but also when the President made the decision that we'd achieved our objectives and we were not going to go get bogged down in the problems of trying to take over and govern Iraq.

Of interest, Cheney's speech was made 18 months after Desert Storm was over, which means in 1992, Cheney predicted that had we'd invaded Iraq and taken over the country, we'd still be there, BOGGED DOWN, trying to GOVERN IRAQ.
Fast forward to March 2003, and the Bush administration story is "6 weeks and we'll be out".
Three years after that its "No one could have guessed we'd still be there by now"

"Macallister Stone"
Do you realize what a cool name that is?
I'm using that in a screenplay....
"Who killed her?"
"The word on the street is that it was Mac Stone."
"Wow. Mac Stone? Macallister Stone? We thought she was dead."
"No such luck."
"The force spent 12 years trying to bring her to justice."
"Someone pulled the plug too soon, because that's a bottle that hasn't been corked yet."
"Macallister Stone still wreaking havoc. Wow. They won't even believe it."

Hm, well, the Bushites certainly beat a dead horse about WMD's, but I think the idiom to best describe them would be:
buy a pig in a poke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poke): To buy something without inspection, thereby creating an opportunity for fraud. Canonical: unethical farmer places a barn-yard cat in a burlap bag (poke) and sells it sight-unseen to another, claiming it contains a piglet.
By hook or by crook : by any means possible
Open up a can of worms:To create a situation that is hard to deal with, to get involved with something that is discomforting, hard to resolve, or not easily escaped
Can't _____ oneself out of a wet paper bag : Woefully unable to perform the task in hand
Castle in the air : A plan that is impractical, illogical and not likely to work
Cry wolf : To raise a false alarm
A day late and a dollar short : Too little, too late
Go off half-cocked : To do something, typically violent or disruptive, prematurely.
I believe its because the NeoConChickeHawks, fail to grasp that:
The devil's in the details : When a task sounds simple in concept, but carrying it out proves much more difficult.
Perhaps because they:
Drink the Kool-Aid : To follow blindly without thought, often to one's own demise.
Or they didn't want to discuss the:
Elephant in the room (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_in_the_room) : The problem or situation immediately obvious to all, but spoken of by none.
But the certainly were drawn to Iraq:
Like a moth to a flame : Strongly attracted to something, regardless of likely negative consequence
And they definitely
Screwed the pooch : To make a grievous error
I can only hope that with the 2006 election:
The chickens have come home to roost : The deleterious consequences of your previous actions have now become apparent
And now they looking at having to
Eat crow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eat_crow) : To suffer humiliation and/or reluctantly admit defeat.
And at least some of them should be:
Hauled over the coals : To harshly scold, reprimand or interrogate someone about something they did.

Greg, it's very clear here. Lemme explain-no, is too much. Lemme sum up.
Dick was for the war before he was against the war before he was for the war. He was also against the insurgency before he was for the deadenders before he was against unknown unknowns.
Does that clear it up for you?

before he was against unknown unknowns.
I finally heard an excerpt of that on NPR the other day. It reminded me of a drunk trying to explain something while drawing from a ten word vocabulary.
I know he's smarter than that, so I'm assuming he was told that his answers had to be at least 15% less intelligent than Bush's. :)
eta: I think the known unknowns thing was a Rummy, not a Cheney.

Are you kidding, Cheney and Donald were two NeoCon Peas in a Pod. Word on the street is that just before Rumsfeld got fired, Cheney told Bush something to the effect of "Over my dead body". Cheney and Rummy both hail from those heady neocon days when realists were in office and neocon nutjobs scurried about in the shadows of giants.
Not to mention, just before 2003 invasion, Cheney was one of the "We'll be greeted as liberators" admireres of the emporer's new clothes.

Buttercup marry humperdink in little less than half an hour.
Our assets?
100,000 troops and public support for 6 weeks of occupation.
Impossible. If only we had a Hogwash Cloak.
NeoCon Nutjob gave me one. He said I looked so nice in it that I could have it. See? "Six weeks and we're out"
OK. Now all we need is an albino to deliver the Hogwash Cloak.

Actually, it was during the invasion that he said that. Right before Rumsfeld dismissed the post-invasion looting (which wound up funding a large chunk of the insurgency) as "untidiness".

Donald Sutherland's character, oddball, was amazing.
Anyway, the movie ended, and all I could think was,
