Hello all,
I jut got done with writing a movie script, and I was wondering if anyone knows how I get it out to studios? I don't know if my movie will be of any success, and if not, it was still fun to write. If so, then that's just awesome. I still learning I guess. But if anyone can tell me how I get it to studios and stuff, I'd be more than greatful. Do I ask for aprice on the script? Or do I just e-mail it to them or what do I do? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions.
Thank you

but don't do a thing with it until you write another one. Then when you're done with the second spec, pick up the first one and rewrite again. No doubt you'll see numerous ways to improve your first story and tighten the bolts. Congratulations on finishing your first, but no way do you concentrate on marketing your first script.

Build your skill set and try to have a few samples of your writing. I would also get a few opinions of your first script. Constructive criticism CAN make help you. Seek out a few people that have experience in writing screenplays or reading scripts or do a script swap. Take the time to work on your writing, build a war chest of material and contacts then unleash your pages when you feel good. But not with a first draft of a first script, you'll most likely be wasting your money and time.

Post some pages here or go to Done Deal. Try a zoetrope or half a dozen site sthat will let you show your pages. And keep on writing. I promise you - you'll pick up this draft in a few years and it it'll look like someone else wrote it.

Writing Again

Re: this might sound crazy

I believe randesq because it happened to me when looking back at short stories I had published -- They looked so childish.

My understanding is that you should go to submission armed with at least two, possibly three completed scripts and three to five treatments -- Hollywood is looking for people who can produce ideas and are flexible: Remember you are not just selling your script you are also applying for a "writing job" which means writing what you are told to write. The job may not be glamorous but an in is an in and the more potential you show the better your chances.

Re: this might sound crazy

it's not likely that you'll sell you first script so do write another and then another. get feedback from others so you can judge your progress.

and no one can really submit to studios* without an agent. you can't get an agent without some proven success** or having multiple great scripts.

*you can submit to producers and let them take it to a studio to finance the project.

**yeah, it's a catch-22: you need contest winning scripts, a produced script, a recommended from an industry professional script, etc....

write on!

Re: this might sound crazy

Get a literary agent who specializes in screenplay.

Buy a copy of the Hollywood Creative Directory or subscribe to similar current list of who's who in HW and send out queries to prodcos and/or consider querying agents, too. Queries consist of a logline, a brief one- or two-paragraph synopsis, and your contact info. They also cost lest to post than entire scripts, which likely won't be read due to time constraints. While you're waiting for replies to come back requesting your script, write more, and revise what you've already written. In between writing and revising, read more scripts. Feel free to post sample pages here or on the Done Deal board for life-changing feedback.

extremely difficult to sell script. my advice - forget it. concentrate on craft. if you are a talented writer you can find work. weekly rate for assignments is through the roof. a few good samples can land this type work for you. result - you could make huge money for years and never sell a script, never even get a screen credit. so - forget selling, focus on craft.

writing assignments

While one can get writing assignments for indie scripts without any difficulty, getting writing assisgnments for Hollywood films or tv shows is as difficult as selling a spec. For these assignments, you'll need an agent.

As for not whether or not the original poster can sell a script, well, we haven't seen her material, so we can't say.

The best thing to do is go to either LA or NYC and get in on the right social scenes and/or get a job in the industry. Recommendation from industry professional is the most likely route. Winning a major contest can help.

Still haven't seen yours, either.
