I SO had a great gag here, but when I did my due diligence research I discovered every single song I ever liked that I thought was a Rush song was actually done by Styx.

Sorry.

Sorry.

My condolences. This may constitute something of a thread hijack, but my nominee for the all-time most pretentious rock band would be Styx. Slight edge over U2 and Journey, but not much.

caw.

CCR.

Brilliant.

'Nuff said.

I was all set with a Mr. Roboto joke. And then a Babe I Love You joke. And then Come Sail Away.

It's all Styx.

But CCR rules. A great band, and the greatest example of a young up and coming group getting about as butt-raped as any group could by their record label.

Just consider the fact that the average rock-and-roll fan worth their salt could name 15 or so songs they did that rule. And all this between, what, 1967 and 1971? Who is that prolific these days?

Oh, wait, we're in TIO, so, um, Clary, green people with beards hate America, or something.

I thought this was another Rush Limbaugh thread and how he hates CCR and that they are from the devil. or something.

Is this TIO enough? :D

Believe it or not, I actually paid good money to see Styx in concert. And yes, it was only because of the girls, and there were legions of them. :)

Well, you saw what that one thing did to that dude in Flash Gordon.

Turned him into the worst James Bond ever?

I kinda liked Dalton, actually. Got a bad rap.

Me too. And A-ha's The Living Daylights was a kickin' Bond song.

Better than Madonna's crap.

And A-ha's The Living Daylights was a kickin' Bond song.

Was that the A-Ha tune? I thought that tune was from another movie. But yes, "All-Time High," that was the name of it, right?

dclary

No I think All Time High was in a Roger Moore Bond movie.

Dalton wasn't anywhere near as bad as George Lazenby. If you want to watch a truly atrocious attempt at acting, watch the Bond he was in (I blissfully have forgotten which one that was).

Damn. I remembered. On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

I remember when Rush did that joke about Slim Whitman. I could not believe that some people actually believed he was serious when he said the Devil spoke in a Slim Whitman song.

Sheesh!

I love the fact that this thread has wandered from Current Events to TIO and back. It's the Ronin Thread.

And why didn't they go to any great lengths to make him appear taller, like they always do with "actors" like Stallone and Snipes, et al?

Hey, at least it's CCR, and not CNR.

You know - Charles Nelson Riley?

I thought CNR was the Canadian National Railway--you know, a Canuck version of Grand Funk Railroad, or the Chicago Transit Authority...

No? Oh, well.

Heads will roll. You know, that would be a helluva name for a hard rock band. I can see the first album cover now...

To get this train wreck back on track, let's compare and contrast The Trees by Rush with Fortunate Son by CCR. Obviously, the latter is the more powerful tune, but what about the actual message?

1) Fortunate Son

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail To The Chief",
oh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no senator's son,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no,

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves? oh.
But when the taxman come to the door,
Lord, the house look a like a rummage sale, yes,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no.

Yeh, some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, how much should we give,
oh, they only answer, more, more, more, yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no military son, SON, NO
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, NO NO

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate son, son son son

2) The Trees

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

CCR is actually playing here on the MS Gulf Coast, in November - at a local casino.

And no, we aren't going.

The CCR tune has the more powerful message as well. This Rush song is (as typical for Rush) far too detached; much of their lyrics were, in fact, with the exception of Closer to the Heart and maybe Nobody's Hero off the Counterparts album (if that's the song that's about AIDS...I can't remember).
