My current YA novel "The Bridge Beckons," is set in the 1960s. I've had one agent and an editor tell me that YA novels set in any era, even the 1960s, is nearly impossible to sell.
Does that ring true? What is your opinion?

Isn't it implicit than a novel has to be set in some era? They can't exist in a vacuum.

Although they are young YAs, the American Girls books have made a whole industry of books set in other eras. I think a good book will sell. Period.

I appreciate all your comments. Other people I've talked to about this 1960s'era stuff agree, it's pretty much a matter of preference with agents and editors, but certainly not a deal-breaker. Some editors don't want 1960's era novels, others love them. When I started this message string, I'd just gotten back comments from two people, one an editor, the other an agent, who both basically said the same thing, 1960s-era novels won't sell.
However, I think of S.E Hilton, and her novels such as, "The Outsiders," which are almost all set in the 1960s, and have been big hits with the teen crowd. I know there are other authors who have done well in this era as well.
I think I'll ignore the nay-sayers who say I can't sell a novel set in the 1960s. It's just a matter of preference.

There will always be a group of people interested in this era or that. Personally I love the 60's and have thought of writing a novel set in that time myself.
I guess it is up to the specific publisher whether they'd want to do that sort of thing or not, but I am sure you'll find someone interested.

Wouldn't it be historical fiction? I personally think that the 1960's were a fascinating time. Why wouldn't kids be interested in it? Keep trying.
Good Luck!

I don't know where I read this, but you might be right. Any story that takes place more than forty years ago can be considered historical fiction. Not 100% sure on that, though.

Conversely, when I was having trouble with the plotting on my current novel, my agent actually suggested I set it in the 60s...although I ended up with the 1940s.
I echo what the others said. If it's good enough, someone will want it.

Riding in Cars with Boys was set in that timeframe, but only during this decade was the book turned into a film. Wouldn't that mean a book set in the '60s it still a valid submission today?
