I have stumbled across quite a problem with my latest novel. Usually I hover around 7-10 pages a chapter and it works exceptionally well. Yet this new teen novel I am working has its own problem. Half of the book takes place in the real world while the other half takes place in an online rpg. Nobody gets sucked into the game but the main character plays it while experiencing mmo culture, conventions etc. Sometimes the game mirrors everyday life and helps him build friendshps and learn strength which he uses in his daily life.
I did not want the first out of game and in game part to be long as to let the reader get used to the format. Origionally I was going to do Odd chapters out game, even chapters in-game. Well my chapter page numbers are now like 2, 6, 4, 8, 6, 4.........
Usually I write lengthy vibrant prose that easily fill up the pages but this novel will be much shorter (expected 70k) than my usual works (120k) since I am trying for the teen market. I believe words are not to be wasted so I never understand when books have scenes that drag which add nothing of interest.
Should I cringe and accept the disparate chapter page amounts OR
Make first half of each chapter daily life (space break #) in game sequence the second half. This will make it so that if one section is shorter than the other they will work together to keep a decent chapter length.
