I hope you dont mind if I stop in here--finally I've found a place where I belong!
23 rejections if you want 'em, all humor and all this year, although one was a near miss. Sasee magazine said I very nearly made the cut (took 'em four months to say so) and said they'd put me on the list for next year's editorial calendar. They probably figured I'd just spend the check on something foolish like food. :)
...but it was a NICE rejection from Writer's Journal, with handwritten note about another market to send this "cute poem" to (they were overstocked). Sigh.

Nope, no wallowing here, Scarlet. This was a challenge I issued at the beginning of the year to the regulars in Weekend Progress Report. We've picked up other folks along the way. Our goal is to reach 1500 by year's end. (Of course, if we get a few acceptances along the way, well that wouldn't be such a bad thing either.)
Keep 'em coming!

I just started submitting; got my first 2 rejections:
Analog (29 days)
Asimov (45 days)
(I'm thinking I'll just turn them around and submit them each to the opposite magazine.)
I've delayed submitting anything for more than 15 years, but last month I took the plunge! It's amazing how much of a rush you can get when you receive the rejections. It was just the kick I needed to get writing again.

Put me down for 5 rejections; sort of! I track these in a submission log that I worked up in word. I write creative non-fiction, and occasionally fiction based on real events. For 2005 I've submitted 17 stories so far. There have been 5 rejections, 9 no responses (i hate that worse than the rejections) and 3 acceptances (1 of them from the publisher that rejected the same story last year. But, I challenged the rejection in a humorous e-mail and he retought his decision.)

11-22-2005, 09:23 AM
you said you got a needed kick out of rejection notices. I do too! At first I thought maybe it was my ego, but I thought a lot of the rejections were hackneyed and trite in style. I had hoped for constructive criticism. But I showed some of them to other writers in a writing club I joined;, they agreed several were pretty poor writing especially from publishing houses. That was a kick for me.

Not really a rejection. Mundania canceled their anthology because they claimed there's no money in it. That after months (more than a year? I don't remember)! BUT, my piece was one of the final being "serious considered"... so go over to the acceptance thread, will ya?

We have slowed down haven't we? I quit submissions entirely in an attempt to regroup. I've got two novels polished and ready. The first one has seen a pretty good blitz and I still have lots of markets for it. The second is new and I've only made a dozen subs so far and it got a little bit better response and I'm waiting on those. Dunno, I have no excuse other than I'm changing my tactics. When I start up again, I'm going to make sure each query/synop is PERSONALIZED to each source with intimate information that only that source would know. That means absorbing every fact about their website and their preferences. I've gone so far as to check the weather in their state and make mention of it. Call it an experiment, but I've found that it is working better than the generic sub. If I do this twice a week, instead of 10 times a week, I think I'll up my odds.
I've discovered another thing. A lot of small publishers have message boards with all their authors participating. So I jump in there and join--shoot the breeze, and then submit. And strangely enough, the mod or administrator is usually the publisher keeping a watchful eye on things. I laughingly refer to it as (deep penetration in stealth mode) and no, that's no a physical abuse crime.
How's everyone else doing? Brick walls out there? Or tis it the season to slow down?

It doesn't look like we're going to hit the goal Barb set for us, does it? I do have a couple of things pending and a few things ready to submit this week in preparation for whatever goal Barb decides is reasonable for us to pursue next year, assuming that she decides to do this again next year.

In the meantime, keep subbing and keep track of any rejections you have already received for 2006. You'll want to know the numbers. ;)
