Does reader's digest take previously pubished stories?

I wouldn't call them secondhand stories; that connotes to me that you heard the story secondhand then wrote about it. I think you mean previously published stories.

I haven't read RD in years, but that used to be their stock in trade. Hence the name. They took stories that were published elsewhere, abridged them, and compiled them into a digest.
