Recently wrote a blog on why I skimmed through some books rather than "read" them.

It's got me wondering. What writing foibles send you skimming a book without getting sucked into the world?

Just curious.

Not being able to relate to or feel for the character. I'm big on that.

In stories only hearts can tell
Also, boring parts.

When nothing interesting happens to the characters, and they are both
boring AND bored out of their minds, even if they don't know it.

I just can't force myself to read through that.

The wrong balance of description to dialogue.

Clunky battle scenes. Hard to explain but when the narrator's voice doesn't feel immediate. Holes in the plot. Spelling errors. Sometimes I don't even bother skimming and can't make it past the first chapter!
