Besides the following, would any of you out there kindly let me know of other writer-centric (?) magazines?:

Byline
The Writer
Writer's Digest
Writer's Journal

Thanks,

Any agent, editor, or publisher worth their salt doesn't have to advertise for writers; the legit ones get tons of mss (solicited or not) every day.

So, in a word...yup.

If an agent, editor, or publisher advertises in any of those magazines, cross them right off your list.

I mostly agree, but Poets & Writers is a magazine for literary writers, and they do have some legitimate agents, editors, and publishers that advertise therein. If you write "literary" fiction, Poets & Writers is one of the best places to find an agent or a publisher.

But still do your research.

Thank you all. But of these below, do you know of any others?

Also, is the material in these mags pitched at the beginner/newbie, or the long-termer?

Byline
The Writer
Writer's Digest
Writer's Journal
[Writers and Poets]

Thanks,

ATP

Absolutely. The only reason some legitimate agents and publishers advertise in Poets & Writers is because literary agents and small press publishers often aren't in the limelight as much as genre agents and publishers, so they can be harder to find.

Soe of the ads in all the writing magazines are scary.

Most of it is aimed at the new writer, but on occasion I still find valuable advice in each of these magazines.

They're also very good places to find new short story and article markets.

And can be helpful in keeping up with the publishing industry.

Along these lines, while it isn't a how-to magazine, and subscription to Publishers Weekly isn't a bad idea.

Romantic Times is also another magazine that might be worth looking at. They have an article on writing every month and recently have had articles on Mystery, Paranormal Fiction, and Suspense. They also have reviews of all genres.

IMO, it depends on the advertisement. The SF/F magazine Locus is filled with advertisements from publishers for the books they have out. Maybe what UJ means is ads for publishing services and so forth? Writer's Digest has become a cesspool of such things. :(

I'd forgotten all about Romantic Times. In some ways, I think it's the best of the writing magazines, no matter what genre you write in.
