Wahington House passes same-sex marriage bill

The state House of Representatives, after two hours of intense debate, voted 55-43 on Wednesday to make Washington the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriage.

It still has some hurdles to get by, but it's looking like it will ultimately succeed.

But after the vitriolic political speech we've all been subjected to lately, here's what State Representative Maureen Walsh (Republican) had to say on the floor during debate.

I found it immensely affecting, and maybe a small sign that slowly, things really are beginning to change.

Governor Christine Gregoire signed the bill into law on Monday, which is great, don't get me wrong... but the opposing side immediately filed a referendum and only needs something like 120,000 signatures before June 6 to put it on the November ballot. And I'm not confident enough to say that the marriage bill will survive after the referendum is voted on by the general public. So frankly, I'm scared to death that my right to get married in my own state will be rescinded come November.
