A fun and novel idea to ask the question amongst a community of storytellers for discussion. Let's just make sure to keep in fun and in the good Christmas spirit and not get too hostile! :tongue

With a great number of stories out there ranging from classics like A Christmas Story to Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer to others like Frosty the Snowman or How the Grinch Stole Christmas? I know some of these can be or are specifically television but I see them as stories just the same.

So what is the greatest Christmas story of all time in your opinion and why?

Best story about Christmas or best story set during and around Christmas in which Christmas plays some kind of role?

Ooooooh! Good points! I guess we can focus on each if you want to have separate categories.

Bad Santa.

That's not one I would recommend to my mom, mind you.

For books, my allegiance is to Washington Irving's stories making up the "Old Christmas" sequence in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon. Irving's the one who made up many of the traditions we still celebrate today, because Irving TOLD us they were old traditions when, in fact, he just made them up. Brilliant stuff.

For film, it's A CHRISTMAS CAROL. The one with George C. Scott. And if you disagree, I will fight you.

My top three are:

It's A Wonderful Life (I can't believe no one has mentioned this)
A Christmas Carol (watch it multiple times each year)
The Polar Express (I know it's a little-kid book/movie, but it strikes a cord with me.)

I will also fight anyone who disagrees with this. George C. Scott rules so hard. I just watched it last night.

For films, I also like CHRISTMAS VACATION. And...my husband and I always watch FRIDAY AFTER NEXT around the holidays, which is the third in the Friday movies.

Yes, we are ghetto.

A Christmas Carol! Also on stage; going to the theater with downtown all lit up and decorated is so Christmasy :)

So I'll add The Nutcracker, too.

And A Christmas Story is always great fun. I think we may have watched that one too much, though. Something new would be great.

I like Scrooged, too :D
