December 2011 Western Prompt

Since December is Christmas or which ever Holiday one chooses to observe, I think the prompt should have a Holiday theme.

It would even be a good idea to get some of the history folks involved in this one. Lets see how Christmas was celebrated both in the mythical and historical old west.

So, we're looking for a holiday or a winter set story that takes place in any and all of the permutations of the Western Genre. You wanna explore how winter or the holidays passed in the 'real' or the mythic west? Go 'head and roll up for the prompt. :)

...Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh

Sorry for being late, but your December Prompt is here.

Its easy to assemble, with batteries included.

The snow has fallen on the range and its starting to look like Christmas. Lets see (fiction or history) what this holiday season was like in the old west, either for a little house on the prairie or for some cowboys in a line shack--it doesn't matter, as long as it has a feel good happy holiday theme to it.

No word limit.

New years deadline.

Good luck!

Monthly prompt guidelines:

- Any type of Western is admissible - classic, modern, revisionist - and elements of other genres are welcomed, but your piece must have the majority of its boot in the Western genre.

- Please label your entry in the following format.

- <Month> Prompt: <Title> (<Type of Piece> - <Word Count> - <Content Warning (if necessary))>

- For Example:

- October Prompt: The Pumpkin Cowboy (WIP Scene - 2000 Words - Adult Content)

- The approximate length of your piece should be defined in the prompt. But, if it isn't, please do not exceed 5000 words.

- Consider posting a short introduction to your piece if you feel it necessary. Also, consider telling those who will be critting you whether you are posting for fun or with a more professional intent.

- Please do not post first drafts and take the time to proofread and correct simple mistakes before posting.

- Please keep re-writes in the same thread as the original work and take the time to think about crits before posting another draft.

- Please try to crit everyone who takes part in the prompt.

- Once you're happy with your work, why not check out the excellent Markets for Westerns (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98548) thread (which can be found in the equally excellent Western Genre Sub-Forum (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=142)) to have a look-see about sending it out somewhere.

We only have one holiday / winter story in SYW so far and December's a third burned. Hope a few more of you are working on one. If you haven't started one yet, remember, they don't have to be long - you can say a lot in a couple hundred words. Puma

You see? And I thought my family was the only ones that called it Wally world. That just shows to go you assuming don't work too well. :)
