I will be attending a writers conference in a few months where there will be editors taking pitches. I'm wondering if it is worth my while to pitch to the editors since most publishing companies prefer to work with the writer's agent rather than directly with the writer???

Thanks,

It is most definitely worth it to pitch directly to an editor. Say the editor requests material from you. If you have an agent, you can have your agent submit the work to the editor with a note that it was requested at such-and-such conference. If you do not have an agent, you can submit it directly yourself and not sit forever in a slush pile.

The editors who go to writers' conferences to get pitches from writers want to get pitches directly from writers. It's not a trick; they really want those pitches, and they understand that the vast majority of the writers making the pitches are currently unagented. So it's not a waste of your time, though it is more expensive than querying agents.
