Augh! Unexpected problem! I have a Mac and use Pages. You can export files as Word (.doc) or rtf. However, when I take those files to work to work on a pc in word, all of my quotation marks turn into these weird bars!

I've tried looking at every possible paragraph, font and language option and can't figure out how to fix this!

Are you using one of the standard fonts like Times New Roman?

What version of Pages are you using?

What version of MSWord?

I'm using Courier Font (I hadn't thought of trying another)

Microsoft word 2007

Pages is part of iwork 08

Yeah, this is a font issue. I've run into it with Excel spreadsheets when I use MS-Sans Serif font, which for some reason doesn't recognize quotation marks.

Huh. I use Courier in Pages and haven't had a problem exporting to Word... are you using smart quotes? That might be the issue...

Smart quotes are the issue; they are high ascii, and depending on the version of a specific font and the source are often mapped to different character numbers.

Hence my suggestion of Times New Roman, a font that is licensed from Microsoft.

Yeah, I knew high ascii can be an issue between programs (I tend to keep it out of my manuscripts).

Hence my suggestion of Times New Roman, a font that is licensed from Microsoft.

Ah! Didn't know they owned the font. That makes sense.

I thought about smart quotes, too, but I could find no way to turn them off.

However, as I revised my title, going to Times new roman worked! :)

Thank you all.

Glad it all worked out. :)

For future reference, if you want to turn auto smart quotes (or any auto correction) off, it's under Pages>Preferences, then click the Auto-Correction tab.

If you do turn it off, you'll have to find and replace " with " to get them all back to straight quotes. (I know that seems silly, but it works.)
