View Full Version : introducing myself

08-26-2011, 03:01 AM
Hi all. I have been hankering for a writerís BB for a few weeks and found you after extensive searching.

Iím middle aged, live in the US, am a published writer of many poems and short fiction. Iíve taught creative writing at the university level as well as rhetoric as my way to pay the bills for a decade.

A few years back, I quit work (dedicating myself to deep poverty) and wrote four books. One novel was not very good. One book was non-fiction. I couldnít get the other two novels read by the 30 or so agents I sent queries to. Those rejections (unlike the hundreds of story and poetry rejections that came earlier) broke my spirit for a time, and Iíve only written for myself in the couple years since. Now Iím starting to feel the urge to write another novel intended for public consumption. Iím not certain if that makes me stupid, courageous, stubborn, or suffering from some rare form of masochism detailed in wee print in the DSM-IVR. All four, maybe.

Iím not on-line often (a time-management choice of mine), and I canít promise to post a lot. I am a decent editor at the line level, and Iíll help who I can with that, when I can.

For myself, mostly I want a place to sometimes complain how hard it is (whatever that momentís ďitĒ is), commiserate and eventually ask for help.

Thanks for having me.

I'm happy to be the first person to say hello lorna. I am no stranger to broken spirits even though I've only been querying or maybe a year or so. You will definitely find the support you are looking for here.

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the 'forum jump' you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. After you post 50 posts you can use the SYW areas to get help there. The password for some of the areas isÖ..vista. A word to the wise, it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

You have touched me Iorna - your statement "Those rejections (unlike the hundreds of story and poetry rejections that came earlier) broke my spirit for a time, and Iíve only written for myself in the couple years since." eloquently describes how I felt when walking in your shoes.

Which reminds me of a little joke I hope will bring a smile:-

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes, that what you'll be a mile away and have their shoes.

Like you, I know my book has literary merit, too bad I canít find a single agent that will even read it. Well, I did find one that read the first three chapters and their rejection, which first told me that I had indeed written something quite unique then went on to use words to the effect of ďÖIím declining though this decision might haunt meÖĒ. That was even more devastating that the outright silence of the others.

Well, I stopped querying and self published. Though I donít know if I can recommend it you should investigate it and consider releasing some of your work in digital form. Donít write just for yourself, not when you are writing things you wish to share, that is a terrible burden to bear.
