Now I have to publish or starve (well, eventually--I can live off my spouse for a while).

I was a lawyer/technical writer and amateur artist. Now I am trying to write novels (fantasy and maybe SF). I'm also planning to work on illustrated humor (my first finished text is "A Maniac's Guide to Bike Path Etiquette)--but I am having trouble getting queries out in this genre. I might float some children's science books just to see if I can get them finished and out with alacrity, since I put most of a couple texts together to help my child get started on science projects (there seem to be a ton of good science books for middle school age kids... not so many that work if your first grader wants to know about black holes).

Lots of ideas... so far my problem has been finishing what I start. I have no idea what I'm doing, and will have lots of questions.

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Welcome! You are braver than I am, good luck! My publishing experience so far is all in high school textbooks, it's great but over here (Australia) all the writers I work with are teachers (including me).

The thing about this business is it isn't fast.

Months to write, perhaps more to query, more for edits and finding a publisher, still more between acceptance and publication. You get quicker turn around with shorts and indie publishers, but they often pay so little as to not make it worth the time you've invested.

That's why most of us writers work second jobs. Those who don't generally write enough to keep the queue full, so at any given time, money's coming in from several projects. But that takes time to get rolling.

I wish you luck. My advice is to write until your fingers fall off. ;)
