Yahoo! gets carpetbombed with free press releases about peoples' poetry books being published by AuthorHouse.

Sending out a press release to every major news organization is kinda pointless unless you have a sensational story. You'd be better off contacting publications in your community (especially cultural/ethnic publications looking that feature feel-good stories on ordinary people doing interesting things).

Most free press release sites don't make it further then google news, that too if its good enough. Paying for better distribution is another option, but i recommend that only if you have an amazing story that the media will be willing to talk about. And by story i don't mean the story of your book.
