Is it acceptible to submit the same short story to several publications at once? Or do they expect you to submit it to them exclusively and take it to another publisher only if they reject it?

I write drama almost exlusively and it is quite the norm to send a play to several theater companies at once.

That actually depends on the publications you are submitting to. Most of them will say whether they accept simultaneous submissions or not in their Submission Guidelines.

If they don't specify in their submisson guidelines, should I assume it's acceptible to submit elsewhere?

If they don't specify, it's always best to err on the side of caution and don't submit it elsewhere. Or if you feel you must submit it elsewhere (and you're 100% positive they didn't specify), you'll probably want to mention that the piece has also been submitted elsewhere in query letter.

If you'll look on the Short Fiction forum where you've posted this thread, the exact same question is posed just a few threads from the top. Scroll back through a few pages and you'll find at least one or two more threads where there's already a discussion of it, too.

You're talking about simultaneous submissions (multiple submissions are several stories to the same place), and no, you should never do it unless the publications say simsubs are okay. I think even then it's not the best idea.

Look back throught the threads or do a search and you'll find tons on this topic.
