So I have a MS out with a publisher, one who has had the story since early February. The editor, in asking for my manuscript, told me to prepare for a 3-4 month wait. Sounds fine. Only problem is, that time has come and passed, and I'm starting to think I might have to do a follow up...I'm simply wondering at what time this would be acceptable. My guess would be a month, obviously I'm not sure though. I'd really like to stay on good terms with this publisher, they said good things about my partial...so what would be a good suggestion here? I'd love to just wait for a response, but I feel as if there needs to be a good time from which to follow up...Thanks as always.

Yep, a month is a good grace period. Now's the time for a polite "yo!" :)

In my head, as do many writers lol.
I agree with CaoPaux, a month sounds fair. Publishing companies are usually very busy (as you may already know lol), so perhaps they are running behind schedule. A month is a good amount of extra time to give them before getting a hold of them.

I'm in a similar situation, with a mms apparently being considered by a publisher (after the mms got finalist status in a writing contest.) It's been
a month since they notified me. I think I should give them another month to exercise first right of refusal, but I want the thing back out on submission by the end of the summer. Nothing in the contest rules stipulates a specific time period for their exclusive, so I hope I'm okay with nudging them in a few weeks.
