Hi people!

I'm a young guy from Brazil, so i'm sorry for the accent and the inappropriate use of prepositions... in fact i'd be grateful to anyone who would correct me in that manner. Learning is always good.

Sometime ago i had an idea for a romance and i thought i should just sit down and write it. I started and soon i came up with a lot of doubts, and that's what has brought me here.

Somedays ago i figured out that i wanted to be a writter for real. I've never really wrote anything, in the sense of having a complete book and publishing it, but i love to create and live histories. And i'd like to show other people the histories that fly around in my mind.

Well, I'm reading Stephen King's "On Writing", and one of the first things he says, is that writing is something that must be taken seriously. So well, here I am, trying to learn the basics before I start.

I'm interested in writing/reading sci-fi and medieval fantasy. Actually i'd love to create something in a post-apocaliptic world.

So, i'll make some questions... if they've already been answered somewhere else, I apologize, but here i go:

1 - I've been reading some of the threads, and some of them have really huge lists of books, like this one http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126838 and i got a little intimidated by it... So, should i really read so many books before i start to write something?
It's not like i haven't already read my own list of books(sure, not big as this one, but it's still something).

2 - someone could suggest me a good software to write? I like to write in the computer, so i'd just like to know which software you use.

Well, Thank you and sorry for the long introduction.

Welcome aboard

Your English use is way ahead of my Portugese. I couldn't even begin to write anything in second language

a couple of quick corrections for you.
We would not say 'make some questions. While we might say make up some (invent or create) we'd most like just say 'ask some questions.

We do write 'in a computer' We would write 'using a computer' or less correctly but not unheard of 'on a computer'

rather than suggest me a good software you could substitute 'some' in place of 'me a'.

Write your book, and get editing help from a beta reader here who doesn't mind having to read and suggest line by line changes. Make that clear in introducing your work to beta readers, since some seem to want only ready to publish material.

Good Luck

Don't forget that you'll need to have 50 posts before you do that.

Welcome.

To begin, you don't need any kind of special software unless you're writing stage or screenplays (and then only because it makes formatting easier).

No need to feel intimidated. If you like reading and writing, that's a start (there is no set number of books you need to read before you write something yourself). Just think of it as a journey.

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Take some time and read the Newbie Guide and the Stickies found
at the top of Forum pages. They are your best guide to learning about
Absolute Write.

Hello and welcome. I am new here too. There is no need to feel intimidated either by a list of "must read" books, or the other writers here. Take a look around and you will get a feel for how welcoming and encouraging they are.
Good luck with your romance novel
