Anybody notice this thread is now in the thousands? When do they get closed and a new thread started? Just curious... I need to know when the move is so I can get in on it. Lol.

Where are my DW friends? I'm confused... I just saw a preview for Almost People that it was airing June 4th. But BBC's website clearly says it's airing May 28th. Does that mean it's going to air on June 4th in America and May 28th in Britain? I don't think I can wait an extra week...

Back for just a moment, looking up interest journals that are illustraded on Barnes and Noble. Kind of collect them as a hobby(write in them too :)). I have found some really cool ones at discount stores over the years and was checking to see if any newer versions came out.
Some of them are kind of rare, *laughs*, but I already wrote in those so they aren't worth anything now. :D

Also, I saw the first DVD volume of Glee (Season 1) in the shop today when we went food shopping. I didn't buy it because I want the complete series and when I finish that the whole of the second series on DVD. Does anyone know when it should be out? If I can't find them in the shops, I'm going to buy them on Amazon, or I might buy them on there if I hit a big target (10K, 20K etc) and I feel like it. :)
ETA: I have gone past the 6K mark, so now I'm going to bed, and am going to (hopefully) reward myself when I go shopping tomorrow. 'Night, guys. :)

The whole series 1 is out, I got it in September. Season 2? The whole thing probably won't be out in one package until September. But the first half is on DVD and the second half should be soon.

05-28-2011, 03:14 AM
I just realized...my story is WEIRD.
“General Lee wants the kid to sign a waiver if he’s going to walk around out here.”
The girl glanced at me, and I tapped my glasses to show that they were translating. I nodded.
One of the men held out a piece of smart paper. I frowned as I read it, my glasses talking to the little computers threaded through the paper, letting it know what languages I read, and highlighting the text that was actual hypertext, with links and expanding definitions and explanations and such.
BODILY HARM WAIVER: The reader does accept, by singing this waiver, that bodily harm may come through shrapnel, bullets, cannonballs, explosives, caltrops, calvery saber, horse trampling, human trampling, and other assorted battlefield illnesses – recreated and keyed to bypass modern immune systems. There are three levels of BHW disclosure clauses, selected and alterable at any time via the signature and witnessed consent of the BHW signer/participant.
I frowned, reading the three levels of BHWs.
There was Minimal Harm, where a little bracelet would guide minnie balls away from me. Apparently the Minnie balls were not actually perfect super duper recreations of the old timey ammo, but rather little hunks of smart-lead that could vaporize itself if it was going to hit someone who hadn’t signed the BHW’s third clause, Possible Death Allowed. They also had little gas jets to move themselves down and strike just the limbs for people who signed the Injury clause. For people like me, who were sane and immediately signed the Minimal Harm section, they’d try and hit the ground and such around me, providing the atmosphere of almost being shot without any of the actual being shot side effects.
A bracelet got slapped onto my wrist and the two men nodded, grabbed me, and dragged me outside into the rain and thunder. I winced as my face got drenched all over again, but before I knew it, I got shoved into an actual reeneactor tent. The inside was splattered with mud and damp, the thick cloth protecting somewhat from the overhead rain, but not the mud tracked in. A man turned from a table, where a large map was spread out.
He was short, and wore a gray coat that buttoned twice down the middle with shiny gold buttons. He wore boots, had really ridiculously pale skin, a beard that looked like a triangle, and a receding splash of hair on the top of his head, which was also silvery gray. He looked almost five hundred years old.
“General Lee, this is the kid we found in the forest.” One of the men said, my glasses continuing their dutiful subtitling.
I hit off a quick search for any ‘General Lee’ before he turned to me.
He sighed. “What is your name?” He asked, using my language.
“Trejo Telvakata, from the WTF clave, uh, four, five days walk northward.”
“I see,” Lee frowned. “You came from the…north…and you weren’t warned that this was a live battleground?”
“No, and I have mesh-linked glasses, they should have warned me. Uh, we did pass by some claves that had really really persistent drones with guns.” I rubbed the back of my neck. “Also, I didn’t come alone, my friend-“
“Damn it!” Lee turned to one of his men. “Get me a courier. I need to send a dispatch to those Jackboots and tell them that their drones shot our mesh transmitters. Again.”
“Yessir!”
Lee turned back to me. “A friend you say?”
“Yeah, she was dragged off by this guy in a blue outfit speaking something called French.”
“Then, I’m sorry, but she has been captured by Napoleon.”
“Who!?” My glasses mesh search had finished searching for General Lee. I read his Wikipedia bio. “W…You’re a civil war general. Shouldn't you be fighting Grant? Not…isn’t Napoleon on the…that’…what is going on?”
Lee frowned. “Times change.” He turned to face the map, even as two men dripping with mud ran in.
“Sir!” They both said at once. Then one shut up and the other continued.
“Sir, the French have taken General Ewell’s artillery fortification!”
“Damn it!” Lee swore again. “Send word to Stuart! Tell him he MUST break the French ranks, and if he does not give a good charge, I will personally escort him to the gates of hell!”
“Yessir!” The man nodded and ran off, half slipping in the mud before scrambling up and vanishing into the rain.

What is this madness? General Lee explains.
“Now, as to what is going on, you know of reenactors, Mr. Telvakata?”
“Yes, you re-enact old battles and ways of living,” I gulped. “But I don’t know much more than that.”
Lee nodded. “We are a recreation of the army of the confederacy, at the high water mark of that nation’s history. Past this point, the real Confederates had no real chance at winning, and could only delay the inevitable.”
“Oh,” I gulped. “Sorry?”
“Don’t be,” He glanced at me. “If they had their way, you’d be in chains and considered less than a man because of your skin pigmentation.”
“Oh…” I rubbed my arm. “You know, I just picked this cause I thought it went well with my hair, right?”
Lee chuckled. “Well, we don’t stick to every reality of the past, we’re not perfectionist reenactors. For one thing, we have these.” He tapped his bracelet. “And for another thing, in real life, General Lee would never have fought the Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, arguably one of the greatest generals of his age.”
“Ah.” I canceled my search for who Napoleon was. “Why are you, then?”
Lee sighed, seeming to relish taking a break from the pressures of commanding a battle without a cell phone – cause, seriously, sending actual people to physically tell people how to do things? That had to be stressful and a half. “Battles represent the extremes of the human experience. But they have all already happened. How can we really…understand what it is like to be in a battle if it is not uncertain? To create this, we shook things up by taking two armies that would never have even seen one another and pitted them against one another.” He smiled, faintly. “Now, do you want to experience a real battle, or do you want to sit it out?”
I bit my lip, and that damn line of reasoning came up again.
“Well, I am on walkabout…”
Lee chuckled. “I can always use one more infantryman.”

amlptj
05-28-2011, 07:27 AM
Climbing mountains?
It was fun sort of.... It was cold up there, around 30-45 degrees... because our place was up on the mountains. My friend wanted to take up to see waterfalls but... it was soooooo snowy up on the mountains. Apparently up there they don't measure snow in inches but in feet... this year was a good year they only got 17 feet of snow!
As we climbed the mountain there was anywhere from 4-6 feet of snow on the path, they padded down a walkway but if you stepped off... you just sank! it was beautiful up there... some of the most breath taking sights of mountains and valleys i've ever seen, ones even pictures couldn't truly capture. The problem was the air up there in much thinner in oxygen and i wasnt used to that and kept having to take breaks to catch my breath and borrow my boyfriends inhaler.
Good news is... I FINALLY HAD FRIED ICECREAM!!

i just cant figure it out... Ok so i continued to read The Shinning... did anyone else read it? Ok so when i started off writing... I read books on "how to write" and there were always rules like "show not tell and keep it interesting in the first three chapters, and dont keep the reader guessing with confusing vague comments" Now i know steven king is a very famous writer and everything but he seems to be breaking all of these rules in this book... So i have to wonder if the shining was such a big huge hit are these rules crap? Is the book just an exception? God its all just driving me insane.

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!! Ok so let me explain why i'm freaking out right now!!!
When i was like 5-7 my friend always used to rent this movie and we used to watch it over and over again... but i could never remember the name of it. for 13 years i've looked to figure out the name of that movie, and i'm no longer in contact with my friend... so i thought i would never find it. All i knew was that it had to do with little woodland creatures and some kind of disaster and they had to find a cure...
So about an hour ago i'm wondering about the movie again... i dont think about it all the time but it just popped up in my head when someone was talking about Ferngully (another childhood fav) so i started doing research and... I FOUND IT!!! I FOUND IT!!! AND I WATCHED IT!!! I FOUND IT!!! I'll be 21 in a week but for whatever reason finding this movie was like the happiest moment ever!!!

Ha! Yes. It's the London orbital motorway, the circular road that goes around London. Notorious for grinding to a standstill at peak hours. It is not yet notorious for ambushes by sword-fighting ninjas in tunnels, BUT IT WILL BE.

chocowrites
05-29-2011, 01:37 AM
my wip is continually in trouble :tongue
I don't outline (I've tried) but it's a plot problem, as always. My WIP isn't a story yet, just some scenes, and moving forward from here will be too hard until I figure out the plot more. the why and the how. hmm.
Ooh, new WIP! What's it about?
Because.
05-29-2011, 01:52 AM
I can't do too much outlining and I can't completely ignore outlining. I just use that Save the Cat beat sheet (and occasionally I'll jot down a major thing that happens for each chapter, if I do much more than that I'll feel like I've already written the story).
You'll get it. I know you will. :)
Hehe. Not exactly new. I'm taking lil' old Escapist and it's sort of a complete re-imagining of it. So I guess it is new (except a few key things).

hahahahahahahahaha! That's how my series started out... There i was writing my first book for like 3 years... about 2 years into it suddenly i hit a new idea while in the middle of history class freshman year... I'm just sitting there when my teacher says "I want you to write a story, a creative story about anything in the world" so i write this little story using my characters from my book and then i'm like SHIT!!! This NEEDS to be a new book! But it has nothing to do with my first book other then the characters... and then the series was born...
Zoealea

Oh God i just started watching that on HBO. ITS AWESOME!!!! I didnt know it was a book! I really should read that.

Octave
05-29-2011, 04:11 PM
YES IT'S AMAZING. I love it to death. Even though I'm perpetually mad at the book for telling me something it won't let the characters know.
I watched the first episode and it broke my heart. Again. After the book did.
I haven't progressed past the first episode, though. I plan to finish the book before watching the rest.
And that's odd, Amp. I thought The Shining was supposed to be one of King's good books. Huh. I'll cross the off my list, then. :D
amlptj
05-29-2011, 04:18 PM
That's what i thought! You see last week i took a trip up to CO and got to visit the hotel that inspired Steven Kings to write the shining... so i figured i would read it... always wanted too just never got around to it. But well again 4 chapters and nothing happened... just the MC touring the damn basement with the maintenance guy, and the wife and kid sitting on a street curb. It just got too boring... no ghosts no creepy stuff no nothing, just how the damn boiler works!
Octave
05-29-2011, 04:39 PM
Hahaha. Well, Pet Sematary was good. A bit slow in the beginning, but once it picked up its pace, boy was it creepy. I'll be careful about Stephen King then, but I hear his Dark Tower series is good.

Yeah pretty much. I've heard his got a few good ghost books, which is what i'm looking for. Terrifying creepy ghost filled books... my next book will deal with that stuff and i've never written about ghosts before... so i'd like to read more about how others do it before i dive in.

Also, I have book four in the Dark Tower series. Not one, two, or three, though. I didn't notice it was book four when I bought it. *facepalm*
And I didn't know Dean Koontz has ghost stories, but then again, I don't think I've read any ghost stories in the longest time.
amlptj
05-29-2011, 05:15 PM
actually for such a big huge fan of Horror i've never read a Horror book before. Well granted I dont read much though.
Octave
05-29-2011, 05:33 PM
Horror books...
I've read a few. Book of Dead Days isn't really horror, but it's kind of dark? As is Picture of Dorian Gray. The Devouring is supposed to be horror but it didn't really scare me as much as those Korean ghost stories my friend used to tell me all the time. Pet Sematary did, however, scare the absolute crap out of me. I'm in the process of reading Needful Things now too, and I read a few stories in Nightmares and Dreamscapes.
I'm not big on horror as a genre, seeing as I'm incredibly lame and scare easily. I do, however, like novels with a dark feel. :D
amlptj
05-29-2011, 05:37 PM
yeah, i love horror movie! I dont get around to reading much unless its a textbook from school... Its because i'm a REALLY REALLY REALLY slow reader. So i stick to writing, but lately i realized i should read more... so i intend to go and read alot of horror novels. Mostly because i want to get a better feel for how to write better horror scenes considering my boyfriend says my books are dark dark thriller/bestseller rather then horror.... which is disappointing to me.
Octave
05-29-2011, 06:07 PM
I have a short attention span, so I'm usually reading a few books at the same time. ^^"
And dark thriller isn't bad. I rather like the genre, actually. But I like almost any genre. *fails*
amlptj
05-29-2011, 06:19 PM
hahahahaha! Dont know how you do it i would get them all confused.
Yeah its not bad i know but... I was aiming for horror. But i guess in reality all by books so far have been well... 2 monsters, 4 serial killers, 1 deformed hillbilly inbreeding hell town, and 1 CIA kidnapping/science experiment creatures. Guess all that is more on the Thriller side. Haven't gotten to the ghosts, and creepy creatures that live in the woods yet...
Octave
05-29-2011, 06:32 PM
I think maybe it toes the fine line between dark thriller and horror? The kind that's both, but if you really try to pick one genre you just randomly pick one? Maybe. I don't know. I haven't read your work.
amlptj
05-29-2011, 06:35 PM
yeah only one person has. My boyfriend and he thinks its more Thriller... me i think its got a good bit of horror in there but oh well... we can both agree that it really dark though.

Question, maybe you guys can tell me. I watched a bunch of DR WHO out of order the other day on the 'marathon' and now am confused cause they kept jumping around.
Is Amy pregnant? Because the Dr. was looking at a gauge that kept going from pregnant to not... So, is it for Rory's benefit that the DR WHO was checking - or did Amy finally have that romp with the DR. like she was always hinting at and trying to lure him into. Just trying to get it all straight with some gaps.
:D

Yeah, I've seen that one too, before the others. That would be part of the confusion. Because she was trying to pulling into her room and he was saying that he was 400 and something, and that it was her wedding day, and... And then he was sure that the crack in time/her wall had something to do with her specifically and revolved around her past.
So yeah, I didn't think anything happened but then there were all these other episodes mixed up/in with it, and I'm like ... okay, the baby check was the last I got to see - did I miss something?

Because: Thank you! :D
Parump: Actually, I doubt I'll start a new one, for a little while at least. My goal's to get this query-ready by the time I go back to school at the end of August, so writing time shall become editing time. After a bit of a break, of course.
Because.
05-30-2011, 07:27 AM
How long is your break going to be?
Kyrie
05-30-2011, 07:28 AM
I dunno. A week? Two? In the "have query ready by the end of August" scenario it'd make sense to have it to betas by the beginning of July, hopefully.

Guys, I really suck at titles. Bleh...
Kyrie
05-30-2011, 07:45 AM
Choco! *pounces* Thank you!
Titles are icky, Because. I've needed to retitle the wip I just finished since I started it. Does it have a new title yet? Nooo...
Because.
05-30-2011, 07:47 AM
Choco! *also pounces*
They really are icky. I'll just leave it as is because if I start looking for a new one...I'm just giving myself a way to procrastinate before starting.
Kyrie

Haha. So true. I definitely need to think of a proper one now, though... eee.

I am terrible at titles too haha. It's like Terrible Title Malady or something. For once though, I am okay with the working title for my WIP.

I like your title, Choco. :)

I thought of the next to LL titles, but I don't know if I should add them to my siggy yet or not.

Thanks Kyrie! My title pleases me slightly just because it ties into a central motif of my WIP but lately I've been thinking of changing it.
Gah...dare I say it? Too much chocolate at once. *shoves rapidly dwindling almonds away*
*goes into chocolate coma*
Because.

Zoe & Kyrie, you two are reminding me that I need to watch Saturday's Who episode. Oh and why didn't anyone tell me how hilarious this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxB1gB6K-2A) is?
I'm trying to stop myself from searching for a title. Trying really hard, but just ugh...You guys have awesome titles. I'll just try and wait until I finish the first draft to see what fits.

Watch it Bec! I'll rep you a link if you need it.
The first 40 minutes are normal and then it's like BAM mind boggling shenanigans at the end. Moffat is evil.
Because.
05-30-2011, 08:11 AM
I'm letting a link load up now. That stop and start nonsense kills me so I try to be patient. Hee.
Why does he love doing that? I'm all calm during more of the episode then he has to go and give me a heart attack at the very end.
EDIT: And once this series is over I'm going to go back and watch Ten. I'm so excited for his era. Everyone seems to adore it.
