Hi
I'm a mum of four girls who are all home educated. I've recently started writing fiction, having written lots of articles for small charity newsletters; and one big article for a charity journal for their specialist workers, which was then reprinted in MIDIRS (Midwifery research journal). So...I know I can write, at least!
But, apart from a little bit of dabbling as a child and teenager, I've never written fiction. I find I need to create time for myself if I'm to be any good in my job as full-time mum/educator etc. and find being creative in that time really helps, but I've struggled to find something creative I can do that is easy to pick up and put down as necessary; and something that isn't easily destroyed by mischeivous toddlers. So I thought I'd have a go at writing.
I started out writing a couple of stories for my children, but I want them to be picture books and I can't draw...so that's a bit of an issue. I think they're quite good, and people who've been kind enough to read them to their children for me have agreed. So I've submitted two to an agent who prefers exclusive submissions so I have to wait 6 weeks before I can approach anyone else.
In the meantime, I am working on a novel I started by just sitting down and writing and seeing what happened. And what has happened is the development of a brilliant (I think - ha!) story and I'm very excited about it. I'm nearly 13,000 words in, but just writing with a pencil in a notebook at the moment - I know it's a bit 'bare' at the moment, and will get lots of extra words when I type it up once it's finished. I'm writing in snatches of time when the children are amusing themselves, or if I'm waiting for one of them at a dance class or something, or late at night when I have lots of ideas for the story that are keeping me awake.
Anyway, really pleased to find this forum - I've spent a couple of sessions browsing it, and I'm looking forward to contributing more
