To anyone who is looking to publish their own ebook (or any novel, for that matter), I have a blog that is exploring how to market a sci-fi ebook.

Right now I'm discussing how to get a decent book cover made, but I will be exploring how to make a book trailer soon. In addition, there are tips on how to make your own Facebook page, use Twitters, tag effectively, and everything else that comes with the rather daunting task of marketing a book.

I've never really understood the idea of a 'book trailer'. If you're a writer I've never heard of and I've got to your novel's page thinking of buying it because the description looked interesting, then the only thing I want to do is read a sample and see whether it's worth reading. I don't want to spend five minutes watching a video which bears little resemblance to the experience of reading a book.

I got a kick out of your response, given your tag movieman. Seriously, though, I think it depends largely on the audience you are trying to reach. I'm with you, a book trailer would mean little or nothing to me, but the younger tech-driven audience might be drawn to book trailers.

Well, I can see that you could stick it on youtube and maybe get a few more people looking at your book that way, but ultimately it just seems like it's going to take time away from writing, which is what actually makes you money in the long run. A movie or game trailer is relatively easy -- you already have movie or game footage and you cut parts of it into a trailer -- but for a book you're going to have to build it from nothing.
