I'm super excited to have found this group! I'm suddenly feeling shy and weird, so I'm gonna try to push on past that and tell you a bit about me.

I used to obsessively write literary fiction, memoir, poetry, and essays. About six years ago I fell in love with roller derby. Skating and roller derby league management took over my life. I've stopped skating, and I'm getting back into writing now. I've spent the past year writing bits of crap off and on (and OFF), but inspiration recently struck, and I'm really feeling the groove again. I still feel desperately rusty, but the physical and mental aspects of writing no longer feel uncomfortable and foreign. Woo!

I'm currently working on a dystopian project, and I'm suspicious I would enjoy writing YA. I'm also suspicious that I've delved into YA in the past without intending to do so...

I'm on Skype a lot (when I play Mafia Wars on Facebook). Skype has its own set of emoticons. It's gonna take me a little while to get used to the ones we have here, heh. I also have the bad habit of typing with no caps. As a teenager I thought that using that kind of minimalism made me *deep*. Twenty years later, it's just embarrassing. Here's hoping I don't slip.

[I know you're dying to ask.... Yes, the recent WI protests that were nearly in my backyard were an amazing source of (writing) inspiration!]

smooches,
Joanna

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Hiya, Joan - welcome to the boards. No need to feel too weird and shy, we're mostly all a bunch of barely-socialized writer types, anyhow -- we'd likely never notice if your social skills are a little rusty. We might not even notice if you wear your underwear on the outside of your clothes, to be honest... unless you post a lot of links. :D

And some of us are politics junkies -- so we've been watching the WI protests pretty avidly. Thanks for the on-the-site notes!

Glad you're here!

smooches,

Welcome! You sound absolutely fascinating.

There are a few others on this forum who have adopted an E. E. Cummings approach to capitalization. As a copy editor, I kind of cringe whenever I see them post, and then I realize that they're essentially providing me with free entertainment in the form of forum posts, and I move on with my life. :) So if you slip up every so often and produce a few all-lower-case sentences, don't feel too bad, or even that you're in bad company.

even i think we can all break a few rules every so often

I love reading about dystopias in general. PM me, maybe we can swap critiques!

Greetings and welcome to the watercooler :welcome:

Take a wander around the various forums, there's lots to see and lots to learn, and even some fun threads too. Come along and pop on over to the Newbie Pub (at the top of the Newbie forum) and say hi, there's plenty of friendly faces that you can chat with and lots of banter. There's also the Question of the Day threads at the top of the Newbie forum where you can answer random questions.

Don't forget to read the newbie guide, and if you want to know what all the buttons mean check out this thread.
