View Full Version : Thoughts on my new, In-Character blog?

Gotta admit, I'm not very good at the whole blogging side of things. This is my first attempt at a blog which is entirely in character, tried to set it out with how Stella Stargirl (The main character of my new novel which is set to be published, True Hero?) would do, full of self-promotion, ego-boosting and pandering to her fans.

So, what do you all think? Once the covers done I'm going to add an image of that and one or two of Stella herself to brighten it up a bit.

Um. You need to tell the reader what this blog is. I know it ruins the illusion but without knowing that there is a book, and in this book superheroes are real, and this blog is from the point of view of the character--it seems like a not very nice and very delusional person's blog. 'Home' doesn;t make things clear, neither does 'about me'. 'A Novel Starring Me' your very last link kind of starts to give the reader a clue.
Also the character seems egotistical, glitzy, celebrity, fashion forward... so why is her blog grimey, gray and has no pictures of her?

I was interested to see what your blog looked like, since I too am running a blog hosted by a fictional character, and using it to promote a book which I haven't yet tried to publish. So I get what you're trying to do, and I hope it works for you. Critique-wise, I'll offer two comments: 1) I saw typos and awkward grammatical errors in your posts; 2) I found the navigation between older and newer posts to be too limiting; I didn't see any obvious sidebar menu that allowed for easy navigation among older posts.

Hi Zefiris!
I get what you're trying to do, but the problem is that Stella Stargirl starts off as a shallow character (which is intentional judging by the write-up from your book). Unfortunately, that can be very difficult to translate to a blog as 1) The character in the beginning has no depth and 2) the character is not relatable to the reader.
I would almost suggest focusing the blog on 'you' the writer rather than the character, but if you want to go this way I suggest you add some pictures, or do something to 'jazz' up the look of the site. Another route you can try is to make the character as overblown as you possibly can.
Just a suggestion, but there are some really good photos on Big Stock Photo you can use, and yes, they do have wacky superheroine images.
Hope this helps,
Natasha

Hi guys!
Sorry it took ages to reply. I completely forgot i made this thread. Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'm going to give the blog an edit tomorrow, spice it up a bit and stuff like y'all suggested!
@Topaz, Stella is shallow, and a bit full of herself and egotistical :) She does get brought down to earth about a quarter of the way in though! I see what you mean though, future posts I'll do by myself (the author) blogging about the book & stuff.
Thanks again!
