For an Internet-weary technophobe this is very scary territory. I don't know how to make smiley faces and don't understand most of the abbreviations. I like writing though, and that's why I'm crossing the Rubicon.

I've written a few articles for an in-flight magazine of a very dodgy East African airline (after editing my work there were more mistakes than before). I've also written 80000 words of a book about Tanzania, where I lived for a few years and then I abruptly stopped - it was more laziness than writer's block.

My last project was a book about my wife's great-grandfather who left a first draft of his autobiography on the shelves of his homestead after his death. He was a superbly interesting man with a sharp wit, a bright mind and an intense love for booze. He was a devoted alcoholic. I retyped and edited the book and had so much fun scratching around in the fascinating history of South Africa at the turn of the (previous) century. We printed a hundred copies and sold them all. But I'd rather get it published now.

If I don't stop now, I'll write another 80000 words and not finish, so hello and howzit and I look forward to interact with you all.

Welcome.

There's a thread around here somewhere with the common abbreviations used in the writing field. I'll see if I can find it for you.

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Howzit, Derik :) Fortunately, the smiley faces are available in a handy little dropdown menu when you click on Go Advanced in the reply box down the bottom of a thread, so you don't have to worry too much about special codes.

Enjoy yourself. It's easy to get lost in here, but don't worry, you'll find your way around quick enough.

Thanks for the advice, help and welcomes.

And I like my popcorn popped. The hard kernels hurt my teeth.

Greetings and welcome to the watercooler :welcome:

Take a wander around the various forums, there's lots to see and lots to learn, and even some fun threads too. Come along and pop on over to the Newbie Pub (at the top of the Newbie forum) and say hi, there's plenty of friendly faces that you can chat with and lots of banter. There's also the Question of the Day threads at the top of the Newbie forum where you can answer random questions.

Don't forget to read the newbie guide, and if you want to know what all the buttons mean check out this thread.
