Tens of thousands of Lebanese opposition supporters on Sunday demanded Hezbollah be disarmed as they rallied to mark the sixth anniversary of a popular uprising against Syrian troops in the country.

"The people want the fall of arms," the demonstrators chanted as they poured into to Martyrs' Square in central Beirut amid tight security, waving the national flag and the banners of pro-Western political parties.

It’s probably just another example of Lebanese religious sectarianism. Shi’a make up the largest religious group accounting for 32% of the population Sunni account for 20%. Hezbollah is Shi’a, former prime minister, Rafiq Hariri, and his followers are Sunni.

For what it’s worth Bin Laden, al-Qaeda, and the Taliban are also Sunni, as was Saddam Hussein.

Edit: added as was Saddam Hussein.

Rafiq Hariri is dead, and the international investigation into his death points to Hezballah. Earlier Hezballah forced resignation of the government because Saad Hariri refused to denounce the findings of the investigation in advance. In 2007, hezbollah took over big chunks of Beirut because of actions it saw as impinging on its "state within state". So, no, this is not just a sectarian thing.

EDIT: It is about the fact that HEzbollah has an armed force, operates as a state within state, and basically, can impose its will on Lebanon. It controls what is going on whether internally or externally.
