View Full Version : Moving a blog but keeping my followers

I discovered yesterday that my writing blog url is just like another's book review url, except mine is on blogspot and the other one is on wordpress.

The other one was started first. I need to change mine. The name is unusual enough (well, I thought it was unusual) to be memorable. And I don't want any confusion.

I opened another blogspot blog with a different url and was able to export all of the content to the new one while still leaving the old one as a place marker for now.

But - I can't figure out how to get all the followers over to my new one. I think they have to just re-follow me.

I hope they will. Probably most won't, just because they won't really notice. They'll miss my postings about moving and just fade away.

Is there any way to combine the followers? Here's the old location:

Blogger allows you to change a self-hosted blogspot url without starting a new blog, go to the setting: publishing tab and there is a field that allows you to change the www.CHANGETHISBIT.blogspot.com. I believe it then redirects automatically and you keep a lot of connections intact.

Or, assuming you still have access to the old url you can go there and post either a manual of automatic redirect page at the index page level. A manual redirect (a 'we have moved' page) can be a better idea as it gives you a chance to ask them to update links, feeds and bookmarks.

Aw crap. I should have asked here first. I already made up a new blog url and exported the old stuff to it. Now it won't let me use the method you just gave me, which seems so much simpler.

Off to grumble and think some more.

Oh hey, I poked around and found I could delete my new blog url and then replace it using your instructions above! And the followers followed!

Thanks for your help. I think all is well now.

(I really should have asked here first, though. In my panic to get it done earlier I spent over an hour recreating the original look and exporting the contents, when it would have been a simple move, if I had just asked first!)

Glad to hear you got it sorted out. It is easy to miss this option as Blogger only added it a month or two ago.
