Hello! My name is Jessica and I just joined yesterday after intending to for a very long time. This forum seems like a really great online resource for writers of all kinds.

As a quick introduction, I've always enjoyed writing fiction and have worked on various projects on and off, but I'm currently working fairly seriously on a young adult novel. I wrote the first draft of this particular story just over four years ago, and am to the point where I really want to get it done and move onto something else. I really envy people who can write fast, because I find that the book is only really starting to make sense to me now that I'm almost done with it.

I suppose I could be considered a "professional" writer in the sense that I write for money every single day, but not in a creative capacity - my job is to translate Japanese documents into English, so I have seen my writing published in a wide variety of places but almost never attributed to me. That's okay, though, because I find this type of writing really interesting and personally satisfying as well.

I also live in Tokyo, Japan, so I have no friends in the immediate vicinity who are interested in discussing the craft of writing (in English) in any detail. For that reason I'm really looking forward to participating in this community in the future!

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Welcome! As for writing fast; I think that when you translate all day, it becomes harder to write creatively. I have the same problem (commercial copy-writing). Apparently, there are only so many words you can write in a day...

Greetings and welcome to the watercooler :welcome:

Take a wander around the various forums, there's lots to see and lots to learn, and even some fun threads too. Come along and pop on over to the Newbie Pub (at the top of the Newbie forum) and say hi, there's plenty of friendly faces that you can chat with and lots of banter. There's also the Question of the Day threads at the top of the Newbie forum where you can answer random questions.

Don't forget to read the newbie guide, and if you want to know what all the buttons mean check out this thread.

Hello! Thank you for all of the nice welcome messages and advice (and for thinking of me during the earthquake). I am thankfully fine, as are all of my friends and family here.

I plan to check out the different parts of the forum that have been kindly recommended soon. Please also accept my apologies for not replying individually - I am trying to avoid using more electricity than is absolutely necessary for work since we are looking at some planned power outages over the next few days. I look forward to spending some more time on the forum and checking out all the various sections soon!
