Okay, so I've been lurking for a while and have finally decided to say hello.

Hello.

I don't like to post much, because I can't ever seem to think of interesting things to say and past experience has taught me that I'm really good at message boards.

That said, I'm going to give this my best shot. I really want to meet other writers....

Mmm, now what?

Okay, so I guess I'll tell you a little about me. I've been writing a long time but am just now starting to get somewhere. I've had five stories published, but only have been paid for two of them. I've written four full length books and am in the process of editing them.(One at a time of course.) Mostly, I write horror, but sometimes adsurdist humor. When the mood strikes I combine the two or write something else. When it comes to grammar and spelling, I am a member of the special Olympics. I don't like to give critiques, but I do because it only fair. The thing is, the more I learn about writing, the more I know I'm not qualified to tell someone else how to do it.

Nice to meet you.

M.R.

Greetings and welcome to the watercooler :welcome:

Take a wander around the various forums, there's lots to see and lots to learn, and even some fun threads too. Come along and pop on over to the Newbie Pub (at the top of the Newbie forum) and say hi, there's plenty of friendly faces that you can chat with and lots of banter. There's also the Question of the Day threads at the top of the Newbie forum where you can answer random questions.

Don't forget to read the newbie guide, and if you want to know what all the buttons mean check out this thread.

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?
Swing by the horror section and see the contest that just started over there. Some really great prizes. You have a couple of months to get it done for show.

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Hello. Well said!

I don't like to post much, because I can't ever seem to think of interesting things to say and past experience has taught me that I'm really good at message boards.

Okay, so I guess I'll tell you a little about me. I've been writing a long time but am just now starting to get somewhere. I've had five stories published, but only have been paid for two of them. More, I would wager, than most of us here. I've written four full length books and am in the process of editing them.(One at a time of course.) Mostly, I write horror, but sometimes adsurdist humor. When the mood strikes I combine the two or write something else. When it comes to grammar and spelling, I am a member of the special Olympics. Ah, the Socratic approach

I'm relatively new to writing also, and I know just what you mean about not feeling qualified to critique.

Welcome! (We can learn together!)

Honestly, everyone is qualified to give a critique. It doesn't have to be a long and detailed line-by-line crit, it could just be offering some advice or thoughts on it. Perhaps suggesting what worked for you and what didn't. Perhaps it was only one line that you thought it was out of place. Or maybe you just wanted to say you loved it. It all helps and is always appreciated.

Ha! That's kinda the conclusion I've come to as well... that I'm not qualified to give crits. I've been posting in the newbie zone while reading the Share Your Work stuff, hoping I will eventually get inspired enough to work up the nerve to toss out my two cents.

TO EVERYBODY:

I'll take a look at the contest. It takes me about a year to complete a story though, well not complete. I can complete them pretty fast. Editing however, that's where I get hung up. (Remembers many shamefully edited submissions and buries head in sand)

Well I don't know about that. I think some people happen to be really good at critiques. Of course I agree with you that everybody appreciates help. (After the snarly head monster shuts up and the rest of the brain can get on with being objective of course)

My problem isn't necessarily nerve, it's just certain (embarrassing) incidents (that shall forever remain unnamed) have taught me how few rules there actually are. It was easier to give critiques when I could spout rule number 52 says don't do x. This are great training wheels, but after a certain point, rules stop being good advice.
