A Saudi man attending college in Texas on a student visa was arrested after plotting to attack multiple locations with WMD's. He was caught because a chemical company alerted the FBI about suspicious purchases he was making. They monitered his internet activity, searched his home, even read his diary. Glad he was stopped. Kudos to the chemical company and the FBI.

Very nice job.

And it's also nice to have a pro law enforcement thread now and then. Thanks.

And another window into how committed some of these knobs are:

In a personal journal found in Aldawsari's apartment home, Aldawsari wrote the events of September 11, 2001, had produced a "big change" in his thinking and that he had been inspired by the speeches of Osama bin Laden, the affidavit said. He had excelled in high school in order to take advantage of scholarship opportunities offered by Saudi companies to get to the United States, he wrote, and had been planning to commit a terrorist attack in the United States for years, according to the affidavit.

That's amazing considering he was only, what? 10? 11? on 9-11-2001. That really is some long term committment.

We have a very good family friend who had an experience with a middle eastern man...damn I can't remember his country, but he was a businessman who was forced by his company to come to the U.S. many years ago. He told our friend that he was terrified, and also fairly aggressive when he first got here b/c he had been taught from birth that we were his enemies, we were out to kill him, etc. He used the word brainwashed when describing his culturally learned beliefs regarding western society. It took him a long time to overcome his beliefs. He eventually chose to stay here, and as far as I know, has completely redeveloped his thinking in regards to American culture. Hell, he must love it if he chose to stay right?

Good going, FBI. Great going, chemical company. It takes guts to call the FBI when you just have a suspicion. Nice work.

And thanks to all involved for keeping us safe.

Right ... there. No, there. No, wait -
I don't understand why people who clearly want to kill us, who say openly that they wish to kill us, who have demonstrated they will kill us, get so much sympathy and help from us. :Wha:

Who, exactly? This guy said he wanted to kill us and evidently made plans to do so. He was caught. I haven't heard any offers of sympathy for him from us.

When do we ever have anti-law enforcement threads? (Well, sometimes the law is wrong and stupid, like the drug laws, or much of the Patriot Act, or that law about me not getting nekkid at the bus stop.)

Actually, it's nice to have a reminder that terrorist plotters require skillful investigation and law enforcement, not military adventurism. When the FBI is on the case and does things right, it's really impressive.

Agorism FTW!

We don't have anti-law enforcement threads. We do, however, regularly have threads where some member of law enforcement is caught red-handed doing something illegal or unethical and generally gets off scott-free or with a slap on the wrist owing to his position.

Pointing out bad apples in a barrel is apparently an anti-fruit position.

Agreed, and congrats to all involved.

It's also worth noting that all the porno-scans and freedom frisks in the world could not have caught this guy.

I think the point is, that more often than not, when law enforcement is mentioned in a thread it's usually for something negative.

Yup, that was it exactly.

We have tons of threads about the few bad apples, but very few about the best and the brightest.

I agree, and have no problem with threads showing something positive about law enforcement, when it's justified.

But I think these threads are also simply reflective of how the news works. Imo, it's less about the opinions that AWers have about law enforcement than it is about the ratio of positive vs. negative stories that are offered by the news.

Well, in threads that happen to be about one cop doing one bad thing there are always posts that make broad generalisations.

I am sure that preventative stuff like this happens all the time, and we rarely even hear about it.

Nowhere. Now here.

This. How many arsons, murders, thefts and violent episodes make the nightly news versus the more helpful things that happened that day? Negativity appears to sell.

That said, thanks for the link Greta!

I was thinking the same thing. As for the latter part of your post---VERY true. A lot goes on behind the scenes that isn't made public. And then you have the stuff the press doesn't feel is worth noting. Why? Because it's not controversial enough or they can't spin it, etc.
