signature character count

So I'm trying to change my signature into:

Theories [Books] have 4 stages of acceptance:
* This is worthless nonsense. [Querying]
* This is interesting, but perverse. [Agented]
* This is true, but quite unimportant. [Sold]
* I always said so. [NY Bestseller]

But whenever I hit "save" it gives me an error message, claiming it can't be more than 800 characters (including BB markups). Word tells me it's 242 characters including spaces, but I have no idea what BB markups are... Is it the colors? But I've seen longer/more colorful signatures out there...

All the formatting commands about color and font use BB code; and yes, they count.
