AW Server Move Announcement
Dear Absolute Write Members:
You’ve probably noticed some slow downs on Absolute Write. We’re going to have to move our server. Now, while the server is being moved, we WILL set up a temporary www.absolutewrite.com site.
The temporary site will be a bit different; for one thing, it won’t be running on our own server. Things will be a little slower. We may have to turn off the automatic mailing of thread subscriptions and PMs (they’ll work just fine when we turn them back on; you don’t have to do anything). We ask for your patience for a couple of weeks until we’re back home on our own box.
Between the time we disconnect the old server and the temporary home goes live, there may be a gap of a few hours. We’ll try to avoid that.
We expect to be at the temporary home for a couple of weeks, possibly less. You’ll use the same address to reach AbsoluteWrite.com (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/) but your bookmarks might not work.
We realize this is inconvenient, but we figured y’all would be in mourning if we didn’t save all your Rep points.
When AW is temporarily unavailable, you can write, or hang out in the AW Chat room, or on AW’s sister forum Written in Stone. You might want to create an account at Written in Stone now, just in case. If you use your AW name, it will make it easier for folks to find you.
We’ll be posting updates via Twitter and Facebook and on WiS. Here are some addresses:
AW Chat room: http://www.starchat.net/chat/?chan=absolutewrite
AW Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/AbsoluteWrite/103771526334620
AW Twitter feed: (@absolutewrite): http://twitter.com/AbsoluteWrite
Written In Stone: http://www.macallisterstone.com/forums/ If you're registering there for the first time, please put the name "MacAllister" in the referral form - it will help us know you're not a spammer
I'll be updating this thread, as I have more information for you. Cheers!
When are you expecting to actually do the move?

Sage, we're not entirely sure. We're in the process of setting up the temporary port in this storm, tonight and tomorrow. Depending on how that goes, we'll have more information tomorrow.
If all goes according to plan, there shouldn't be much more than a couple of hours of wonkiness while the new DNS propagates. At worst, we may be down altogether for a while. We'll keep everyone updated as we know more.

There will be a while during which we lock the forums--you'll be able to read, but you won't be able to post.
This is to make sure that your Rep comments, which we know are crucial for three or four of you, will be (knock on wood) preserved.
Mac or I will post dates and times as we know them.

I've deleted 45 new potential spammers, so two possibilities:
1. Your browser cache is remembering that you were there a few minutes ago, and is therefore lying to you (clear the cache).
2. Have you already registered?

Nah, I know what you're remembering.
Starting January 9th the server host was moving their routers and changing their DNS, which meant AW was bouncing up and down like a Yo-Yo.
It was like moving three times in a row, and not leaving a forwarding address.

By Register I mean you create an account.
It's Really Smart to use your AW name in your WiS account, because the script kiddies are out in hordes, and it will make your compadres realize that you're alive and well, and writing.

I'm thinking if Mac or Medievalist have posted here today, they're likely approving new members over there as well, and it might not send an email when they do. Try logging in even if you haven't received an email.
Also, another reason you might not get an emails is it could be stuck in a spam filter. Don't blame the filters, blame the spam that makes filters a necessity.

Thanks, Mac and Medi. I did not know the site was moving to a new server until someone mentioned it in the RT. I set up Written In Stone (http://www.macallisterstone.com/forums/) or WiS three years ago as a staging site.
A staging site is a Web development equivalent of a practice run, or a draft.
We knew we'd be upgrading vBulletin, the software that runs AW's forums, and I wanted to test it first.
So Mac and I created a sister forum; we figured it would be a test site, a good place to talk about books, and that it would be available when we had to take down AW's forums to upgrade them.
Written In Stone isn't the temporary AW site, but it is a sort of refugee camp, as it were.
It does look and act a little different; some stuff is turned on there to see if people like it.
You do need to create an account at WiS. Having an AW account won't automatically transfer.
I'm encouraging people to use their AW name at WiS since it makes it easier for people to recognize you.
Please, when you create an account at WiS put MacAllister in the referral field -- it helps weed out would-be spammers.
If you have problems or questions feel free to PM me.
Thanks all.

Sometime this week, we'll be locking the forums; you'll be able to read, but not post for a while, so we can get a fresh-hot-off-the-press backup.
What that means for you, is that there will be a while this week when you can't make new forum posts.
There is likely going to be a short period--we think just a few hours--where you may get an error message as the new (and temporary) server comes to life.
The temp server is likely going to be a bit slow; we'll need you to be patient.
As we have specific dates and time, we'll let you know.
These are ways to keep in touch in the meantime:
AW Chat room: http://www.starchat.net/chat/?chan=absolutewrite
AW Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/AbsoluteWrite/103771526334620
AW Twitter feed: (@absolutewrite): http://twitter.com/AbsoluteWrite
Written In Stone: http://www.macallisterstone.com/forums/
WiS is a home-away-from-home for AW folk. We use it to test the forum software before releasing it into the wilds of AW.
If you're Registering at WiS for the first time, please put the name "MacAllister" in the referral form - it will help us know you're not a spammer.
You can Register with the same name and email you use for AW.
We turn registration off at night to avoid hundreds of would-be spammers. You can PM medievalist or email her a medievalist AT mac.com with an email address and an ID and she'll hand approve you.

Okay, everyone - today's the day. The boards will be turned off today at approximately 3:30 pm, Pacific (USian) time/6:30 pm, East Coast time. That lets us grab the most recent data and move us to the temp host. At that point, I'll redirect the DNS.
Then what will happen is you'll get a "page not found" error when you attempt to go to absolutewrite.com (http://absolutewrite.com), that may last for anywhere from the next hour to about three days.
You can watch for updates in these places:
AW Twitter Feed (@absolutewrite) (http://twitter.com/AbsoluteWrite)
Written in Stone (http://www.macallisterstone.com/forums/)
Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/AbsoluteWrite/103771526334620)

Been talking in the chat last night about all this moving thing and what kind of work is actually involved behind-the-scenes. (I know that from having done several large installations myself in the past.)
I must say this was done very professionally and with the minimum hassle for the users affected. DNS propagation (a thing outside control of the AW server crew) was also relatively fast: After about 6–7 hours the site was reachable again under its name (instead of the IP number) here on my German network.
So kudos for your excellent work, whoever was involved!
Medievalist
01-28-2011, 08:43 PM
We're still working on a few things; propagation is still an issue for some, and we've got issues with avatar and profile images, and sigs still, but be patient for a couple more days.

Don't Use The IP.
Seriously. Don't.
Especially on Windows, don't.
People will probably have better luck with http://absolutewrite.com than with www.
Also, encoding the link with a link shortener will work for many, because they all seem to have the current DNS going.
Please don't use the IP.

Here's a clap on the back for Shawkins and Mac,
And of course the incomparable Medi,
They all make so light of working all night,
But our home's back and shiny and ready.
For Mac is our Queen, though she blushes unseen,
And Medi of course is just ace,
I wouldn't think four kings could outrank our Shawkins,
These three are the gods of this place.
For we know they're all there and we know they all care
If something should happen to trouble you,
For the hosts of our ball and the Mods one and all,
Let's raise a big cheer for AW.

We're currently having a problem with so much email coming from the AW server, that the ISP has throttled email from our server. We're working to fix that, but what's causing the problem are the email notifications of Thread Subscriptions.
It would help hugely if people would set the email notifications to Daily or Weekly, rather than Instant.
UserCP
List Subscriptions (On the left under Subscribed Threads heading)
Select a thread in the list of threads you subscribe to
On the far right is a check box, under the heading Notification
Click the box, and please select
Below the box is a pop-up menu that says Move to folder . . .
Click the menu and select either Daily email notification or Weekly email notification.
* This only affects Thread Subscription Notifications
* If you are OK turning the email notification off entirely, at least for now, I'd really appreciate it.
* Please feel free to pass around a link to this post.
ETA: I expect that this will be temporary.
