View Full Version : Can someone help? (connection reset errors)
I have a problem with my computer at the moment, which is getting worse.
When I try to log in here, or move from post to post I seem to lose the connection. I end up with a page of code and then an error message saying:
"The connection was reset while the page was loading."
It's taking me ages to read or answer posts.
Has anyone come across this before?
I've been experiencing a lot of lag time before the AW server answers, but it doesn't happen all the time. I suspect the site is super busy, and the server is having trouble keeping up with the traffic. I could be wrong.
Thanks for the speedy reply, RJK
Great news. Not that you're experiencing the same 'lag' but that it may not be my computer after all. Phew!

Muse are you using dial-up?
Hi, Medievalist. Nope, wireless.
I've just noticed, though, that this 'lag' is happening on other sites, although, not as often as here.
You're going to tell me my comp is sick, aren't you? *bites lip, tries to be brave.*

Hey muse,
This is a tricky one. It could mean something nasty. But what about trying:
Tools - Internet Options - Delete temp files history etc.
Also, as you're using wireless, have you tried the Windows connection diagnosis thing, and I hope you you don't get lost by this technical jargon.:D
It may be a router problem. So give us some more info. But do the Tools yadda yadda yadda mentioned upstairs first!

Not that I'm a great authority on wireless, but it does sound like a router problem. My Significant Hacker was complaining about similar symptoms a couple of months ago.

I have ccleaner running on start up. That deletes everything. Right? (please say right because that is the most intelligent thing I'm gonna say in this post.)

Nope, not lost at all. Jargon means yadda yadda yadda. Yes?

The ankle biter has a netbook thingy, and it works okay on the wireless yadda. so....huh?
Heeeelllp!

Does this mean I'm in trouble? Huh? Huh?
I'm not panicking, nope, not at all.:D

Same here. While this happens, all the other traffic-heavy sites are running fine. YouTube, FaceBook, etc.
That looks like an issue close to AW.

router trouble usually just means unplugging (power off) the little thing with the blinkenlights for a few minutes and then plugging it in again.
sitting here with my laptop on wireless wishing I was home lol
I switched the router on and off, but it doesn't make any difference. I'm still getting the message and lovely pages of code.

Is it possible that you have your router set to obtain a new DHCP IP number at too frequent an interval?
What I mean is:
Unless you pay extra money for a dedicated static unchanging IP, your ISP allocates you an IP from a pool of them it controls.
Each time your router is provided with a new IP, some things are reset.
This can interrupt connections.
There's often a router setting for when to get a new IP; it may be called lease time or something similar.
Set it for the maximum you can.
Alternatively:
Is your wireless router open to the public? Can anyone use it?

Sorry to be so dense but, huh? :e2shrug:
I didn't realise IP addresses changed? I thought each computer had one IP address?

I never leave my router switched on. Does this mean that it's searching for a new IP address each time I switch back on?
Could this be the problem?

I don't honestly know; the software used to modify and set up routers differs from maker to maker--and if it otherwise works, and you're not a geek, I'd hesitate to mess.
When the router reboots, it can take a few minutes for it to be allocated ("leased") a new IP from your ISP.
It's also possible you have some malware.
It's also possible you have some malware. Please, please don't mention the M word!
I constantly update and run my malwarebytes, plus I use Panda Cloud, CCleaner and they all come back clear.
I think I need to read up on routers and IP addresses. (Who said you couldn't teach an old dog new tricks.:tongue)
Thanks for trying, Medievalist.

If you can find a pattern for the errors, that would help. Could be length of time browsing the Web, time of day, particular sites.
Also: Could be interference from something else that emits signals, essentially screwing the radio reception of your WiFi router.
Other WiFi routers can override your signal. baby monitors and even microwaves.
Try setting the Channel on your Router to another number, with some digits between.
(If yours is now set to 1, try using 7)

My son is also on his laptop and playing his playstation on line. Maybe that's interfering with the signal, or overtaxing the connection? (Wow, that sounds intelligent, there may be hope for me yet.:D)

That's quite possible.
Maybe keep a log for a week?

Yep, someone else playing online games can be a problem -- huge bandwidth hoggage runs everyone else off the road.

Quick Post:
Thanks, Matera, but I tried going on line today while my son was at school - no joy.
I've been faffing around, trying different things to see if I can fix this problem. (Yup, that's why I'm online at 00.35, my time - and on a school night too. lol )
I peeked in to check if anything had worked, and so far...(crossing fingers, eyes, legs...) it has. :Jump:
Have no idea why, except I switched back from all-new yahoo mail to yahoo classic. (I have been getting a pop-up each time saying my screen resolution is too low so I increased it.)
Can it really be this simple? Am I just sleep deprived? Have I been standing on my head too long? Maybe it is a quirk of typing one-handed?:evil
Whatever the reason, for the moment I am gliding through posts, effortlessly making my way up and down the boards. Alas, I have no time to enjoy it. The sandmen are calling and tomorrow I am off line.
I'll try again, on Thursday. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
Well, Thursday has arrived and so far (crosses fingers) it's still working.
I'd like to thank everyone who jumped in to help (both here and behind the scenes).
Cyber Land doesn't seem nearly as scary any more.
