You know, the more I hear about these guys, the less I care for them.

Frankly, I'm shocked that an upstanding group like Hamas would support something like this.

I know you are joking, but far too many people (especially on the left) try downplaying Hamas' extremism as only "an opposition to Zionism", try latching on stories to show how Hamas is "moderating" etc. Then there is the inability of far too many people to aknowledge Hamas is a terrorist organization.

EDIT: Then, there is this disturbing poll

I'm actually a little shocked that those numbers aren't higher.

Don't get me wrong.

Those numbers are HORRIBLE.

You always hear about how we're not at war with Muslims and that it's only a small group of extremists. Well, this graph shows otherwise in my opinion.

But, I would have guessed even higher.

P.S. Well done, Turkey.

I think a lot of the time when people talk about there only being a small group of extremists, "extremists" is used to mean people who would actually become terrorists. It really shouldn't be surprising that these groups have quite a lot of sympathizers - most people who have studied the ME know this.

Good thing there is no god. Just lots of fanatics who think they have some kind of divine power on their side.

If all that energy went into worldly human pursuit, territorial disputes would have already been settled.

Fair enough, but to me there's a fine line between extremist and sympathizers.

Without the sympathizers, it would be A LOT harder for the extremists to operate.

They would be shunned and made almost impotent. A lot of those SYMPATHIZERS provide money and support and housing and there's probably a group of "ACTIVE SYMPATHIZERS" in between extremist and sympathizers.

It's a big problem this whole thing.

One thing to keep in mind those is the number of actually people in those countries. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world (they likely have more Muslims there than Jordan and Lebanon have people) and the majority are against all three of those groups. Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt are probably the next three in terms of Muslim population and the majority are against these groups.

If someone actually did a world wide poll of how Muslims (including the ones in Europe and the Americas) felt of these three factions, the percent favorable would probably be kinda low.

Point made.

Depends on your definition of "kinda low." What's kinda low? Until we get in the single digits, I think we gots big problems.

I'll accept that it would be lower based on your population theory so you so eloquently presented to us.

I'm guessing fifteen, maybe twenty percent. Still higher than I would like, but they'd be minority none the less.

Fifteen-twenty percent of 1.5 billion people is kinda a lot of people

P.S. I don't see more than 20% support for AQ, and about 40% support for Hamas and Hezbollah in Indonesia as particularly low (Indonesia is also considered probably the most moderated Muslim state). Also, read the whole poll, particularly support for harsh punishments (such as stoning for adultery and execution for leaving Islam) -- absolutely frightening.

True, but a lot of them come from third world countries that are either dirt poor or have insane leaders. So it's likely the none Muslim populations of those areas also support some extremist group or another.

Oh and I only said that majority of Muslims in Indonesia don't support those groups. Not that their support was low.
